Update, finally! Got the stand built, painted, and stained!

Not bad for a first stand eh? Though I must admit, most of it was my grandpa. If only I could build a stand out of Legos... Anyway, sorry to Eric(Eww) for stealing the color choices from him. Originally the whole thing was going to be stained except the corner trim pieces that were black. But, when I started staining the plywood, I decided I really didn't like the way that stain looked on it.(Turned it kind of a funky yellow-ish color). Worked great on the doors though so I decided just to douse the rest in black. Probably can't tell from the picture but the handles are bullet cartridges from my grandpa's favorite hunting rifle. Even though I'm not really into guns, I kind of view them as his signature on the stand so I like them.

So, my next project will be the sump. I have a thread with a first draft on the plans here:http://www.reeffrontiers.com/forums/f14/first-sump-design-63388/

Got it of off craigslist, definitely in need of a cleaning. It will need about 8" inches cut off the length in order to fit inside the stand

Can anybody explain to me why there is a hole in the bottom of it? The only thing I can think of is it lead to a drain in case the sump overflowed?!?

So that's it for tonight. Have to do some more research on the sump, especially on how to cut it and stuff.

The stand came out nicely!! Not sure on the hole in the sump though. That's strange unless that sump sat on top of another one or above the tank to drain down. Who knows. I'd just plug it lol.

how are you going to get that sump in and out of that stand? the brace u put in between the doors will always be in your way. you can cut it out if you made the rest of the stand strong enough. or do the sides come off? Looks nice though. good job :)

Looks to me like they were using that sump as a fuge above their sump/tank or w/e. Hole would've been for the drain pipe i guess.

Your stand came out real nice. Hope you enjoyed the time spent with your grandpa. The colors look a little different than Erics. Maybe it is just the pic.

After you install your sump into your stand I would recommend you skin the back for lateral bracing.

Thanks, it was fun, I'm glad we were able to work on it together. I was referring to it being all black except the doors. I don't think it's the same stain. What do you mean skin the back?

cool. i was just worried about that sump a bit. if it ever bows/cracks/breaks etc you will have to break the whole tank down to replace it. shouldnt be a problem but yah never know.

You need to keep the back of the stand from racking by applying a sheet of plywood on the entire back of the stand. If that is the only way to get to your sump I would just screw it about every 4'' around the entire perimeter of the plywood. Even a 1/4 thick sheet would do the trick.

JD, stand looks very nice, cleaver way your grandpa worked in his passion into your passion.

I've got 2 10" pieces of plywood that are going to go on the back corners(you can see them sitting inside the stand in the pic) and then I've got a 2x4 to put in the center of the back as a brace.

That will be better than nothing.

Would plywood across the entire back be better?

Most definitely would be the strongest option for lateral racking and stability. Like Dave says, just a thin skin covering the back and screwed every few inches is all that it takes. You would be surprised what it does.
