Bought a beautiful teal green Acro colony last week. Within this past week one branch has turned white/bleached maybe. I dont know if its bleaching out or suffering from RTN.

Thing is, it was pristine in the store tank and within a week as I said this is happening. Parameters could not be better.

Lighting had been replaced with fresh 2 each 250W 20,000K and 4 VHO blue actinics. Coral is in upper part of tank in a slightly shaded area as opposed to being hit full on with the MH's

My question is can this be something isolated to the one branch and if I nip it off below the troubled area will this save the colony or is the entire colony doomed :( The colony is fairly large and nipping a branch is no big deal.

Strange thing is all my other stonies are thriving no sign of trouble. Any ideas on what this may be and how to combat it? Could it be something that will take the entire colony or worse take out all my SPS??

Im baffled please help. It has doubled the affected area overnight. I am due for a WC this evening and will follow suggestions at this time.

Thanks all.

It does happen and usually has nothing to do with the store. "Parameters could not be better" What are they? How about a full tank shot current photo? You can snip off the effected area and seal with super glue.

Was not blaming the store, just want assurance that with all the money I spend there and this oiece going south soon the store might help me out.

Further you have given no suggestions on what it may be. And what are some common treatments. Parameters could not be any bteer other than alk runs about 11.5

You posted your question in the new to reefkeeping forum. The store has there own forum. This being the case you, instead of getting defensive answer the questions and we may be able to help you. Without information its pointless. I did offer a suggestion that may save what remains of your coral.

acro problem.

Hey guys-
I just happened to catch this thread in my random visits to RF. JC, I don't know if you have attempted to reach me or Cy through other avenues yet, but I will reply here. I'm am not sure of which green colony that you are referring to since we have a few in the store right now, but if you could send me a picture of it or let me know who helped you I'll do some research to find out if something out of the ordinary happened to that coral. As Don had mentioned, unfortunately you can sometimes have everything appear to be in check and still fight the RTN issue. The most common factors in my experience to cause it is suppressed alkalinity, electricution, heat stress and inadequate water flow and the coral suffocating in its own slime. Once there is any sign of STN or RTN it is definately to your advantage to be proactive and snip off dead skeleton, cutting into some good tissue and monitor closely. Any parts that cannot be cut off should be capped with superglue and again I would apply glue partially into good tissue as well to try and seal the infection in it. Lastly, I would bring in a sample of water to the store after you have tested it with your kits and hydrometer to compare to our results to ensure we match and they in proper order. i hope this helps and we will do what we can to help the situation.
Thanks and good luck-
Tim

Thanks Tim I spoke with Cy at the store and I tried last night what he suggested as you did also. Cut the affected area off and capped off with SG. Everything looked fine and when I got home tonight Wed the issue had spead to alomost the entire colony. Tissue continuing to slough off and exposed the white skeleton beneath.

Now the scary part this seems to have spread to my rose milli and it is just a small spot the size of a pea. I am really freaked out. I have too much invested to lose the entire tank. I will bring the green teal acro along with the milli in tomorrow after work around 6pm. I will bring a water sample too. As far as water parameters the only concern I have is alk and it hovers at 11.5. This is on the high end I know but I am told also some hobbyist do run the high end with no ill effects.Salinity runs at a constant 0.25 taken with a high end Sybon.

I am just sick with worry about this sad turn of events.:(
