All my other corals are fine, even my "Expert only" corals are doing great but my "beginners coral" isnt. I was told a chimp could keep these corals alive. Is this usual or is there obviously a stress issue? do they often hide their polyps for weeks in a healthy state or shall I try to find a root to its stress. it seens to have a glazed over look, if that makes any sense, kinda shiney on the cap when it never was before. spanks for the info guys.

Mine does that for a few days after a water change. Usually only last two days. I was told to run carbon so that when it does sluff it causes no other problems.

thanx guys, im going to put my hand infront of the flow to gauge it, all my fluerecents are new so it shouldnt be lights. i guess i should be throwing up my water perameters when asking these questions eh? test time, brb

If it is in a position where detritus might find its way on top of it like maybe by an over hang it might be cleaning itself off. Does it looks slimy around the edges?

My toadstool would do this for a couple of days per month. The polyps would retract, a slime coating would build on the top for a day and this slime coating would eventually slough off. Usually several polyps would break through, several hours later there would be quite a few more. By the next day, they would all be out and the slime coating would create a little more skimmate for me. I have noticed that aiming a small powerhead at the top while it is slimed up shortens the time period for it to be closed up.

My toadstool hosted my clownfish, so Corky was always very nervous whenever the toadstool closed up. It was the only time he would get aggressive.

Thats exactly what its doing, but when the polyps come up, they only come up sporatic. not everywhere, but in a few places. okay, so the slim doesnt mean its dying? thats what i thought, because itll open and close then open again in one hour. doesnt seem happy

Check your alk and pH to see they're out of wack, that seems to make them pout for extended periods. Point a powerhead at it to loosen the "leather" coating.

I knew they were quite sensitive to pH shifts, I didn't realize they were sensitive to alk changes as well.

So, for instance, if I've recently started dosing kalk at night and everyone (like the SPS) looks fine but the leather (two, actually), it's time to test the alk?

Thanx.

stag, i would recommend it, i checked my alk and alice was correct, it was too high. maybe I shouldnt have used rusty sewer pipes to aquascape my tank. yes, im kidding.

Wow. Okay, right after breakfast.

Incidentally, even though I now have several very colorful SPS in the tank (adding more as time goes by), the leather has always been the star. It's the one people comment on the most, with its waving polyps and huge cap and maroon clown buddy.

Really hate to see this guy suffering!
