I set up my first tank 10 days ago using uncured live rock - it is still cycling but I have noticed a half inch long rugby ball shaped lump hanging under one of the rocks - it was all covered in a browny grey 'slime' . Then I noticed that part of the slimy covering had gone and underneath is a dark pink/red colour with white (could be white rings but not enough uncovered to tell) - also has a small hole in the uncovered section with a very fine appendage coming out - it looks like it could be reaching around but this may just be a small section of the covering still attached and moving with the current - any ideas anybody??????? - see my gallery

Welcome to RF!!!! It is pretty hard identify things on description alone, a pic would help us all out better. :)

a pic would certinaly help. but if i would have to venture a guess it would go with decaying sponge.

many sponges die immediatly when they are exposed to the air (they are filter feeders and the flitration just collapses). its common to find dead sponge when you set up with uncured LR (especally if you order it online). if that is the case use a soft bristled toothbrush and scrub the rock in areas where you see it; it will speed up the curing process some.

this is just a guess it could be any of a million things though. good luck

You just about have to be REGISTERED to do anything on that other Forum... then be a paying member to even search. The search function is the most useful feature, then to have it locked to paying customers only defeats even being a Forum!

Well, sometimes it lets you search without being a paying member...but the bandwidth for paying members is larger so the search feature is available more often...lol. Even paying members aren't always able to search. I'm not a paying member but was able to view the pic. Although I have no idea what it is. Ummm, if you're able to post a link to the pic in photobucket or get the pic in this thread, it'd be very helpful.
