Reef Aquarium & Tank Building Forum

Help Support Reef Aquarium & Tank Building Forum:

Hey webmasters, When I view the website there are areas where the text is overlapping (October meeting info, the first line is over the top of the menu) Is it just me?

This worries me. It looks and wraps perfectly on my end. Do you keep your web browser in Full Screen mode? If not, can you 'pull' the sides of the screen a little bit wider?

Ghazni has been here a number of times and hasn't mentioned that anything is wrong.

Is anyone else having a problem?

Vicki

Vicki and Kris, what is the resolution of your screen? I tried different screen resolutions and things looked fine.

Btw, as an FYI, this is a common problem with website which are trying to support different resolutions.

You can read more and test out our website @ http://www.screen-resolution.com/

Okay, my son solved this for me. I am using firefox 2.0.0.16 and he says the website is optimized for internet explorer. He showed me how to use the IEtab to make it view on my screen better. And WOW it looks a lot better this way. I now get all of the font info etc. looked a bit boring before as everything was very small font.

I am sure glad you got it figured out and that it's working for you now. I don't think it's optimized at all; it's just in pretty simple code. Have your Son look around and see if he can find a place he'd like to have his information posted at.

The resolution of my screen is 1900 x 1200 pixels.

What does "this is a common problem with website which are trying to support different resolutions" mean in simple to understand terms? :D

Vicki

Vicki, this simply means that people with other screen resolutions may have problem viewing the page properly. So, this is some data from 2006 for how many people use what resolution

Screen Resolution Percentage
640x480 and below 0.13%
800x600 8.92%
1024x768 61.57%
1280x1024 25.71%
1600x1200 and above 3.68%

Now, with better monitors and LCD screen and Internet Explorer enhancements, people should be able to see the website like you developed it. But browser like Safari and Firefox may still work in the old fashion.

My simple recommendation is to add the following line to the page "This website is best viewable by using Internet Explorer 6"

I just added another TAB to the menu on the website entitled NEWS. I've posted the information about the Barrier Reef offer there as well as the information from Kris' son's website.

If this is NOT okay with anyone, please let me know and I'll get it changed back.

I like the news page! We should really commit to keep it fresh!

I was thinking about my sons banner last night because as I reviewed the website since we only show the sponsors that are offering discounts to members currently. The idea that I came up with was that we would have a second section on the sponsor page that was for "These Sponsors have provided free or reduced priced services or goods to support the PSAS"
Then we could list sponsors like CFI and my son that aren't routinely offering discounts but who still support us in other ways. Just an idea I wanted to throw out there.

So, would you prefer that I move it 'somewhere' on the Sponsors page? I can do that!

Vicki

I liked your idea and have now moved him from the NEWS tab to the Sponsors tab. Makes a lot more sense.

Keep up the ideas everyone!

Couple of things. For me to view the website correctly with Firefox I have to click the IE tab each time I go there. I did not have this issue before, just since the changes have been made. Can you look into what it would take to make it view properly regardless of what type of browser people are using. When my son gets up I can ask him what he knows about it.

Is there any way to add the sponsors added to the new section into the rotating banner thingy (love my tech talk huh!) that is displayed on each page.

And finally, everybody needs to think about the businesses we collected items for the raffle from that maybe are not part of our "discount" sponsors list. For example I know the Seattle Aquarium donated a behind the scenes tour, I am sure there were others. I think it would be great if we could get them all onto the sponsor page.

I really appreciate the input!

I will certainly look in to it as to why Foxfire 'sees' it differently!

I think it's best to keep the Sponsors that give the discounts (as per our cards) in the rotating banners. IF we add everyone that has ever made a donation to PSAS, it could become very complicated; but certainly is possible. We just need something 'special' for the LFS that provide discounts to our Members.

I'm all for adding any contributors to PSAS to the Sponsors page. Maybe those that have donated in the past year? I just need a Banner and/or URL for each of them.

BTW, the Seattle Aquarium Tour didn't happen. Steve was supposed to make up a certificate for us and that failed to happen. THEN, all the rest of us just forgot to see that it was put into the drawing at the BBQ.

THANKS for all the suggestions!
Vicki

AWESOME JOB VICKI!!! The website now displays correctly with firefox!

THANKS Kris. Please let me know if anything goes wrong  Whenever I edit any page, I then have to check it with Firefox and usually find something else to fix.

Does anyone else use a 'strange' :D browser?

Vicki

Vicki,
I was doing some research and asking my friends about it @ work. They said try to make the page for FireFox and it should support the IE Version 7 (the latest one out there). They also said not to worry about IE 6 since it's out of date and not very good since it does not follow standard protocol. You want to give it a try?

The HTML editor I use is a Microsoft product, though an old one that isn't supported any longer. Is there an HTML editor specifically designed for Firefox? I'm always interested in trying a new program. :D

Vicki

Vicki,
I will look into some products that are built by Microsoft. I know I get discount on those but never needed to buy them for me in the past.
