Does anyone have any suggestions on quieting the sound of water falling into the overflow box? I've read that reducing the gph in the return would help, but what are other options? Also read a somewhere about using zip loc bags around the edges inside the overflow?? Thanks!

Do you have a standpipe in the overflow??

Mojo

if you do....and assuming you don't like mojo is. my main standpipe is about 3 inches below overflow box and I have no sound. the backup is an 2 inch above that. standpipes REALLY save on ziplock bags...I'm assuming as i have never heard of that before.

Any chance on you posting a picture of your overflow box? May make it easier to suggest what to do. :)

I currently have 2 durso in there.

yeh, durso's are just dumb. bean animal is just over complicated for relatively nothing. look up herbie overflow's and there is no need for anything more than 2 standpipes and one gate valve. gate valves can be found online or at ace hardware in tacoma that I am aware of. totally silent and dead reliable!

you can bring the durso higher to have a bit higher water line. the higher the line the less noise.

What size pump are you running? The reason I ask that is if the pump is not supplying the righ amount of water to the display, then the durso's are out doing the input. Meaning that they are sucking the water faster then what the pump is pumping. The durso's in the picture look to be right. One thing that I have done to my durso's is add a breather valve to the top so that I can adjust the syphon. Once the water gets to a certain point in the durso water starts to fall down the pipe. In a completely closed pipe this creates a suction. It will pull a large amount of water through the pipe, which is ideal, however the overflow water level might get below the head of the durso allowing air in and creating the gurgling. So by adding the air valve into the top you are allowing a little bit of air into the suction that slows the flow down just enough to keep it above the opening of the durso. I hope that made sense. It made perfect sense in my head.

I've been using the durso stand pipe for about 6 years and I don't really hear anything from the water going into the overflow box, unless the air hole at the top becomes plugged ( or narrowed) from salt buildup.
I do have my durso fairly high so the the water only drops a 1-1/2" to 2".
The whole tank is pretty quiet. The most noise comes from the water coming out of my skimmer and I can only hear that when the house is completely silent at night.

how often does this happen?

On mine, I would have to guess every 2-3 months. I can always tell, if it's getting noisey, then I know to clean it.
Pop the cap off and run a little hot water through it at the sink, or just stick something small and pointed through it.

I found that as my system aged, standipe developed a coating, pumps slowly wears and pumps less etc that I was constanly tinkering with my durso's. what REALLY sucks is that I came up with the herbie concept all on my own! found out I missed it by many years buy it could have be called the "piotrowski" lol. for me it just made so much sence. so I tried it. I don't use anything more than two straight standpipes though....no need for extra elbow etc.

The really nice thing about this hobby is we can all pick our own way of doing stuff and when it works, that is the perfect way to do it.
Many different ways to achieve the same end.

yeah the skin a cat thing lol.

I run that 50g display fuge on a 120g tank and have zero nitrates or phospahtes ( elos kits and hanna checker)....and also biopellet reactor on a 65g with zero nitrates of phosphates. hindsight is why have a 50g display fuge beside your main tank when you can tuck a biopellet reactor underneath.

Thanks for all the help. I switched to herbie and it is all quiet now, no bubbles in the sump either. I'm running a mag 12 on the return. I had to dial the gate to the drain a few times before getting it perfect.

Thanks for the suggestion, I thought about that also. But James for envision acrylics set me up with a nice black acrylic lid that covers the overflow opening so if I made the pipe taller, than I wouldn't be able to use the lid, and I would rather keep it for looks.
