Wave makers

The timing is set to 2 plugs having 30 second on/off periods, and the other plug has a 3 minute period. You can't change it, right?

are you talking about the Natural Wave Maker power strip? if so it is adjustable from 30 seconds to 3 minutes. Plugs 1 and 2 are cycled to the time you set and Plug 3 is double the amount of time set. So yeah you can change it....you can't change each plug individually though.

Oh... I didnt know that. Thats a lot better. I thought it wasn't adjustable. Now if I can only convince my girlfriend that I need it...

I really like it. It's nice to be able to turn off all powerheads at once. It's also nice to watch things sway back and forth instead of one pattern.

I am thinking of building a hang on closed loop so I can get rid of a couple of my powerheads though. Tank is kinda cluttered with 4 powerheads and 2 returns! :)

If you build a closed loop w/ SQWD I'd probably buy the wave maker off you with the maxi-jet 1200s (if thats what you have).

I hear you Matt. I can imagine that many powerheads in a tank could distract from the display, but man does this thing work good.
John. If you want a quick, simple, cheap and fast way to set up a wavemaker then I would recommened this unit, but if you have the extra money and want a cleaner non cluttered look like Matt was saying go with the SCWD. The plumbing isn't as taxing or intrusive as you think. You could easily hide the whole thing behind the tank.

Also. Has anyone had one of these wavemakers long term? I would like to know how long the maxi's hold up to the constant on/off cycle? One of mine is quiet as can be, but the other buzzes a little. I think it might be cavatating(sp?) a little. It just needs to get the air out.

a few friends have been running maxi-jet's on the natural wavemaker for a year or two without any problems. some of the aqua-clear powerheads wear out after only a year.

so they should last long term....i've not had mine long term so i can't speak from first hang knowledge.

I just ordered the wave maker this week. Hopefully I'll get it today. I dont think I'll be cutting into a brand new maxijet, but I definately want to get my hands on a used one that I dont care as much about.

i think i've tried about every cheap wavemaker trick out there. i bought a hydor bio-flo attachment for the maxi-jet. it works to diverse the stream and to create a random current. the downfall is that it makes a maxi-jet 1200 into a maxi-jet 600 or so it seems. the current is spread out so it may be close to the same but i'm sure it takes quite a bit of force to drive the device that spins the head. the best and cheapest thing to do is to cut the tip off the maxi-jet. it spreads out the flow without taking away from it. it also alternates the current from one side to another with a wavemaker. right now i have one maxi-jet with the modification, one with the bio-flo device, one that is a straight powerhead and a seio m820. my favorite is the seio and my 2nd favorite is the modified maxi-jet for flow.

the other thing to do with a maxi-jet is to aim it towards the front or back of the tank and let it bounce off the wall to create a random flow. don't point a maxi-jet towards a coral or anything as it'll rip the flesh off with time.

I think I may cut one of my maxi jets to see how this works. I don't have a Wavemaker so I just want the flow.

you could buy a timer, crack it open, and make it so it changes ever 60 seconds instead of every 24 hours (but then you do run a risk of it failing, but as long as you have a back up one running all the time I dont see a problem... can I post a link to another forum or no?)

i haven't seen a rule where we can't post a link to another forum/website on here. i hope it never comes to that on here.

Here is my close loop... Hope it helps...

I also have Natural Wave Maker... bought 25 bucks off ebay... connected 4 maxi's....
two on the right side facing the right wall and two on the left side facing the left wall... Indirect flow is what i use... and it bounces off the front glass.

But the trick is...
Socket 1 = Left maxi
Socket 2 = Right maxi
Socket 3 = Another Left and Another Right maxi at the same time...

Really good effect.. And very nice on my 36x18x18 tank.
