Yesterday i saw a large amphipod crawling on one of my zoas. It was about 5/8 of an inch long. I actually thought it was a baby mantis shrimp until i went online to look at pics.

Curious as to how big you guys have seen? Ive read reports of ones like 12 inches long caught in the wild

I'd say just under 1/2", there were a bunch of them hanging out in a spare liverock tank I broke down last weekend.

Mine barely get over 1/4". Anything bigger wouldn't be able to hide from my fish very well!:D

I think thats why i am seeing some biggers ones now. I recently lost my lone fish to ich so im going on 2 weeks here fishless. 1 month and a half to go before i can know for sure its all gone. Bet ill have some monsters by the end.
Unless my peppermint eats them

Is that some kind of rule that you are supposed to wait 2 months after having ich? I've heard from some very knowlegable people that ich is believed to almost always be present, but only unhealthy or severly stressed fish usually catch it.

I have 8 fish including a mandarin dragonette and a six line wrasse, 2 peppermint shrimp and a huge brittle star. I'm amazed that I even have a pod population any more! I have almost 200lbs of rock in a 75 gallon tank though.

From what i have read and heard ( from experts on the matter)

Is that always present ich is a myth. Ich is a parasite that needs to feed on a host fish or it dies in about 8 days. However from what i understand the cysts can remain dormant and alive for up to 2 months. So to play it safe having a fishless tank for 2 months should eliminate any ich in your water column. And then a future quarantine of new additions complete with hyposalinity or copper treatment will prevent it from being re added.

It works very well. I had a Tang with Ick. A quick copper treatment (ie 2Week) followed by 6 mo of chilling in the hospital tank and no more problems. Just use new saltwater on the hospital tank to prevent reintroduction.
