Hello. I'm asking this question and not trying to attack the site by any means. I think Lee may have the best information for any fish keeper that is trying to learn on any of the forums available on the web. Unfortunately being humans we see something, as is the case of seeing an orange spotted filefish on the icon of reef frontiers. Novices who don't know or don't ask questions will see this fish associated with a site that provides good information and think it is a good choice for their aquarium. Nothing can be further from the truth as their track record is poor at best. Also the other fish that pops up from time to time looks like a princess parrot or parrot sp. Another fish that should be completely avoided because of diet and size. So wouldn't it be better to have a fish that is displayed with the reef frontiers signage that is better suited for aquarium. i only bring this up because when i first got into the hobby, if I saw something I thought was pretty I bought it without asking questions. I have learned, but maybe by removing these fish from the home page could save a fishes life and help deter the stress of learning to keep fish? Regards, Tim

I heard a presentation given by a responsible author of marine books. I spoke with him after the presentation and complained that the cover of his book showed two Ornate Butterflyfishes. They were of course obligate coral eaters and not to be kept in a home captive environment.

His reason was that he had no choice -- the publisher chose the stock photo. Similarly, we don't have that choice. Your point is well taken and a point I have made to many authors who still include such photos in their publications. The oddity, delicate, and beautiful attract and fascinate us. I put the Regal Angelfish into that category. Less than 5 fish out of 100 caught will live beyond 1 year in a home aquarium. I try to tell hobbyists not to buy them, but. . .They are so beautiful. :(

Reef Frontiers signage rotates and yes one has that fish as it is a beautiful fish, but by no means do we ever recommend a fish and nor should it suggest that we are recommending a fish. Anyone wanting any fish should do the research before any livestock is obtained.

Again I want to stress that I said those things because of the nature of humans seeing something beautiful and then wanting it without asking questions. It's the whole Nemo and Dory. Thankfully many people are in this site looking to obtain information. If one person has learned from this post then I think it served its purpose. Thanks, Tim

Hi anyone in a right mind would check and get as much detail on any fish, inverterbrates, and corols before buying anything to put in there tank that they have spent a lot of $ on.
you spend the moneys on getting right equipment for the set up doe's not stop there just because it up and running.
just my pennys worth:)

I like the eel in your avatar picture. Based solely on that picture and the fact that your previous posts makes it sound like you know your stuff, I think I'm going to get one and put it in my 10g nano. Thanks for introducing me to such a beautiful creature. ;)

Not being a jerk... just wanting to point out some other interesting angles of your logic.

Are Orca's safe for my tank. I read somewhere that they are safe. But all in all your point could be a good point, on the occasion that a person that has no idea about keeping a tank could see that and become overly excited and get one.

Okay. Lets pile on me. I am just pointing out this site is frequented by people who are new to the hobby. Being a newbie and knowing a thing, people may see those pics of the fish I mentioned and think they are acceptable choices for a fish. People are not visiting my avatar for information and by no means does an avatar dictate any information but something that one particular person likes. Someone new to this hobby has enough problems trying to figure everything out. I'm saying this because when I first got a tank I was the guiltiest person ever to just see something and had to have it. Didn't matter if I was looking at a shark for my 10 gallon. Just trying to ease the stredd of a newcomer to the hobby. Thats all/ Tim

You're kidding...Right?? This is an actual thread?? If so, I think maybe you are reading a bit too much into this. Anyone new to the hobby that sees a fish they are interested in will usually ask about the fish first before adding it to their tank. If not, then they will usually pay the price for not researching first which will be their own fault and not RF's. With that being said, as long as I have been a member here, I don't think I've ever seen someone talk about how they went out and bought a fish they've seen profile in one of RF's banners. Half the time, I don't think people even really notice the banners up there. JMHO

BINGO! We have a winner! Seems like the same thing applies to a logo or banner. You mean you didn't choose your picture to send a message to the world, like Reef Frontiers is doing? You mean people can choose things like that just because they like the picture?

And you're right krish... until I saw this thread, I actually never even noticed the pictures in the banner! (My apologies to whoever slaved hours to put them together!)

If we blame it on Mojo, he will probably never find out, so I think you are good to go. Plus I have to agree with Kurt and Krish, who the heck even notices!!! Somebody has more time on their hands than they are good for.
