Yippee! I got another toy!

Hi everyone! I am glad you all enjoyed today's meeting at Jonathon's house. I am sorry I could not be there. But I did end up going to Bellingham and picking up a 24 gallon aquapod from Jason. It came with 150 watt MH and a Remora nano skimmer. Of course, I immediately thought of modding it (A la Krish) but hubby won't let me, so I will use it as is until he changes his mind.

At any rate, I think this will be my zoanthid-only tank. I have always wanted to set one up, and on top of that, I am tired of having zoanthids in my "main" reef because having them limits my options as far as other critters go, so I think this is a perfect solution

I bought a Hydor Koralia 1 pump the other day and I am thinking of putting it in there for extra flow. The only trouble is, the sucker is SOOO noisy! It only uses 4 watts of electricity, but I could swear that half that energy goes toward making a horrible whine. So I am not sure whether I will use it or return it.

So what do you all think about the type/number of fish I should have in there? Pipefish? Dwarf horses? A school of Vlamingi tangs? :lol:

some suggestions:
Pipefish would look cool! or get some gorgonias in between the zoas and have some type of seahorses! or a mated pair of firefish.....

same here, no noise at all! thing is though, I had to take mine apart before it even did anything!

OK, I will trade my brand new noisy one for your used super quiet ones :lol:. Or I will take it back and see if they will exchange it. It is just a high pitch whine which I can hear from one end of the house to the other :shock:

Nelson, where would I ever find a mated pair of firefish? That sounds like a very cool idea!

em.. I dont know(lol) but I've read about them! you could try to get a few young ones and see if pairs build or just get two unmated. Sorry, I read this a long time ago(1-5months) and there is sooo much stuff in my brain that has to be sorted. lol

If you are going to make it a zoanthid only tank, I would go with only one or two fish.
One of which should be a wrasse of some sort. They make very good tank mates with zoanthids because they like to eat some of the critters that will eat your zoanthids.

Well Julia, no dwarves. That is way too big for them. For full sized seahorses, no more than one pair. And at that, the seahorse board frowns on even a 24. If you put a pair of horses in there, don't plan on any other fish. Yeah yeah I know people do it, but please be prepared to spend your time at seahorse.org reading and understanding how much work and effort these creatures require. I have nothing now; because they wore me out.

OH, I had no clue sea horses were a bunch of work (I mean as compared to any other reef fish). I guess I will do some reading. But if they are indeed that much work, I will pass for now. Until our remodeling is done and the house is clean, that is.

I am just curious, however, why is a 24 too big for dwarves? Sorry, I don't know first thing about them.

Here is a picture after I brought the stuff out of the car (meaning, before cleaning, re-siliconing the inner wall and putting everything where it goes). I have been lousy at taking before-and-after pictures, so I'll try to do better this time. I am aspiring to be more Krish-like in this subject

Curious what wore you out about them? Maintaining the stability in a stand-alone system? Breeding?

(as another data point, we run a 37 hex plumbed into our main reef, and with careful selection of Horse breeds that can enjoy life at 77 degrees and eat enriched Mysis, find they're no more maintenance then just a couple of more panes of glass to keep clean)

A 24 nano is too small for any of the large species once they reach full adult size. Especially if they start to breed, it's a tank height issue. Dwarfs need a species tank without corals. They're small enough so that that anything that can remotely sting has the potential to injure them. I also doubt that there'd be a good way to balance the flow needs of corals with the lack of flow that dwarfs would need.

IMO, as long as you go with captive bred stock and can provide the right habitat, horses themselves don't require much different care than other marine fish.

I'd stick with a more reef compatible fish for that tank.
