Anyone have DYI Overflow Box Plan?

When you drill the tank then typically you silicone in an overflow box to put the water level back up above the bottom of the rim. You can buy the boxes pre-made, but I always just cut a sheet of 1/4" acrylic and take a propane torch and bend it around a 2x4 or 2x6 that I've rounded the edges...

Anyone have DYI Overflow Box Plan?

HOB continuous siphon overflows take a whole lot of acrylic skills, there's plans on melevsreef if you want to check them out. It is much easier and cleaner looking to just drill the tank...

    Stand Build Project

Its always better to make the weight of the tank help hold the stand together, and as you have it if the tank goes all the way to the edges it will be trying to tear the stand apart... So +1 on adding the braces shown, so that the force is transferred from tank to wood to floor without going...

Poll on people who dose or have reactor

 thats almost 15 grams of caco3, which is like 8" worth of acro every day. and here i was stoked when my tank started using a whole 3ml pipette per day lol. thanks a lot NWDiver now I need a big tank

    alk testing

I've found my salifert to be quite precise but all I have to compare it to is API. My only complaint is the writing rubs off the syringe after a couple dozen uses, but they are cheap. More than once though I haven't paid attention and used the calibration solution instead of the test solution...

    alk testing

Salifert alk tests come with a standard solution so that you can test your test kit to make sure the chemicals are right and that you aren't doin it wrong. Does the elos come with one of those too? I'd trust the elos over the other two btw, unless the seachem and API both read the same.

    cptbjorn's 3g Cube Pico

Thanks :) Power went out last night but I'm running my diy pump off of a 6v lantern battery and wrapped the tank and an oil lamp up with some aluminum foil and towels and it hasn't dropped below 75F, works pretty well and everything has stayed open like nothing happened. Last winter I kept it...

    generator power

My parents have a 5000 watt honda generator that is ~10 years old and the inverter on it doesn't run pumps very well; they run choppy and make clicking noises and don't move as much water when running off the generator. The fluval canister my mom used to use wouldn't even spin on the generator...

    cptbjorn's 3g Cube Pico

I picked up some corals this weekend from the BRA anniversary sale and figured I should give an update since a whole lot has happened in this tank... I had a crash early last month when the heater went out while I was on vacation and the tank was around 60-65F for 3-6 days. With all the sps and...

    Anniversary Sale Version 4.0

It is statistically unlikely that they have called all the winners yet, I think he is pulling your leg.

    3 gallon Pico

I got my sexy shrimp from both barrier reef and blue sierra. They are pretty cool and mine would spawn at least once a week too and feed all my lps. They are only reef safe when you keep them full of mysis and pellets though, if you start to slip up and don't feed them every day or two they'll...

    CA Rx - CO2 level

You can always just drop by and have a look at the full ones they have too, there might be a new-looking one ready to go for trade-in. Lots of people buy kegerator/reactor/airbrush/whatever setups and go trade in their brand new bottle and you can get lucky and nab those when they get refilled...

nice shot, that one of the best LED actinic pics I've seen. crazy hard to get the colors right on those...

Poll on people who dose or have reactor

I dose two part according to the guide at http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2006-02/rhf/index.php, the alkalinity part is just baking soda and water and the calcium is calcium chloride I picked up from bulkreefsupply. 15 bucks in supplies will last me 25 years or so at my current consumption...

    uv leds

Also I will add that the UV filter glass used with halides only attenuates most of the UV-B and UV-C regions, it is mostly transparent to UV-A and halide powered tanks should theoretically be getting significant amounts of UV-A depending on how much the bulbs are putting out.

Dosing Ca/Alk/MG prior to Water change?

Can you see inside the tank to know if it has dissolved? it is pretty tough to say how much because the carbonate that is on the walls should buffer the solution at 7.something until it is gone. I'd probably just try one two liter at first and see where it gets you, because how I've done it...

Dosing Ca/Alk/MG prior to Water change?

you can dissolve precipitated carbonates in your saltwater mixing tank by adding seltzer water until the pH is slightly acidic. the excess co2 will blow off over a few hours/days depending on the air surface area and it is ready to use when the ph is back up in the 8's. you'll probably need to...

    uv leds

There are many people keeping SPS under LEDs alone, myself included, and the simplest successful setups usually have combinations of royal blue and cool white. You can add in other colors as well (I've seen people do UV, cyan, green, neutral/warm white and red) but the effect of doing so is not...

    uv leds

This is correct, many of the inexpensive UV LEDs are technically just really deep purple, which is usually considered to go down to 400nm. 400-410nm is all but invisible to our eyes though and all you see is coral fluorescence, so it seems like a blacklight/UV effect. As far as those UV...

    uv leds

I have one of the cheap 3w ones from kaidomain over my 3g; when the blue and white strings are on you can't even see any difference turning the UV on and off and I don't think it does anything useful as far as coral color and growth. With the lights off though you can get some crazy effects...
