A look at the dreaded "P" word

Glad to see somethings never change. Still drinking your meals.

A look at the dreaded "P" word

That is so wrong. Nuisance algae is a huge issue not only in a cold tank, but also in the wild. Due to the nature of a cold tank (heavy feeding, slow bacterial metabolism, and little natural N & P reduction), algae can really boom. We do have the ultimate weapon against it though....light. A...

A look at the dreaded "P" word

I mostly feed the Reef Nutrition line of foods through an automated feeding system. At feeding time, I have an automated three-way ball valve that redirects the return flow right back to the sump. This way, the display tank circulates within itself and water doesn't go through the filtration...

A look at the dreaded "P" word

Hey Mike....long time no see....I drive by your place every few months on my way up to Anacortes to dive. I'll have to stop by one of these days to see what you're up to. As for N & P.....my situation is a little different than most since I run a 400 gal coldwater tank these days. There is no N...

    Awesome Tuamota Maxima Clams

When I was in Tahiti, I always saw a local towing a small boat filled with these clams. While snorkeling one morning, a local decided to be "nice" and shuck one right then and there for me to try.....which I did.....and I hate seafood. Oh well....didn't want to be the ugly American. I only wish...

    My Coldwater Tank

Collection laws are linked below.... scroll towards the bottom of the page for things we're mostly interested in.....and stay out of reserves or state parks. You could also get an educational permit which would allow more access ( a few teachers here in Oregon have done that)...

    Coming Soon 850 gallons

Another thing to consider about your dimensions......my tank was 6 ft wide.....which meant that I could reach everywhere from one side or the other. At 84" wide, I think you'll find that you will not be able to reach the center 12" or so. You could solve this though by just not having anything...

    Coming Soon 850 gallons

I'm here everyday Dang.....just rarely post. I am thinking about coming to the Jan meeting of PSAS though and tie it into a dive trip. Perhaps I'll see you there.

    Coming Soon 850 gallons

Nice sized tank.....I have to disagree with you on the height though. While it is true that some folks might struggle reaching every inch of the tank that is 30" or higher ......I always found the overall aspect ratio aesthetics to be more important. IMO...as tanks get wider......the height...

Puget Sound Cold Saltwater Tank Design

I used to use a sulfur reactor....but, it would frequently get choked with bacteria and require complete cleanings. I currently use automated vodka dosing to control N & P. Both levels are zero (as much as zero can be with a sailfert test kit) even though I have three automated feedings per day...

    Basket Starfish

First of all....you have a feather starfish (crinoid) not a basket starfish. This is a basket starfish: http://www.oregonreef.com/images/photos/cold_basket%20and%20horse.jpg I've kept both for years....although, the cold water varieties. The feather starfish are nocturnal filter feeders that...

Puget Sound Cold Saltwater Tank Design

There are a couple differences from Southern Australia that are unique to the Pacific Northwest.... 1) Our water is alot colder than 64 F.......Our average is about 50F.....two winters ago (at about 100 ft) my temp gauge registered 38 F. Most cold tanks up here are kept from 50 - 55 F. 2) We...

    temperate stuff

That is not neccessarily true. The state makes a distinction between "personal use" and "commercial use". There are rules for personal use collection throughout the DFW website. Don't collect or sell to others.......that will place you under the commercial moniker. First of all....you have to...

There's also a new outfit from Oregon starting up. I don't know anything about them though... http://www.foreshores.net/

    oregon reef new look

The cold water pink corals are corynactus californica. The grey substrate is from Puget Sound and the clams are really food for the starfish in there. They just filter the water until one of the starfish find them.

Nothing to be sorry about Dang. I think you did a great job under adverse conditions. Aquarium photography is sooooo difficult and frustrating.

    oregon reef new look

On my warm tank, I'm currently using 14 coralvue 400 watt 20k on HQI ballasts. The RBTA's are confined to rear right corner of the tank. The pics don't show it well...but that rear section rockwork is an island....the RBTA's won't cross the sand.....they stay pretty much confined to their area...

    oregon reef new look

Thanks again to Jonathan, Sherman, and Dang for the nice visit. I always enjoy talking to you guys. Dang.....the photos that you took aren't too bad.... (maybe a little on the pink side though)..... especially considering that I had only half the lights turned on, all the pumps going full bore...

    cold water reef pics

Well....there's really no difference to report. I am going to make some changes though. I'm going to place all my large (fish eating) anemones into the smaller tank by themselves....and place all the fish, seahorses and corynactus (strawberry anemones) into the bigger tank. I have several more...
