Is 1000 watts of light for 100 gallon too much?

I appreciated all the input. It is the comment "corals do well in bright light - DUH! " that set me off I took as being rude and unnecessary. And as I keep repeating, I only have the 2nd 400 watt on during midday to stimulate the midday sun. I will experiment with different duration over time to...

Is 1000 watts of light for 100 gallon too much?

no offense, but you input it totally useless and missing the point altogether. Go green? well if that is the case we should all just shut down our tanks, shouldn't we! And hey, if you are less concerned about your coral's well being and more concerned in the cost of electricity, maybe you should...

Is 1000 watts of light for 100 gallon too much?

So far my tank is doing very well with the 1000 watts of light and I am seeing the most polyp extension when both 400 watt lights are on. And as I stated before, I am only running my 2nd 400 watt light to simulate midday sun for 5 hours. Although, based on how good everything looks under the...

    Baby Shrimp

I have a couple dozen baby shrimp in my fuge and sump. Anything I can do to help increase their odds of survival? I threw in some coral frenzie but doubt they eat that. I have a lot of pods naturally so I hope that will feed them. Hard to get a picture, here is a crappy one.

who is eating my ACAN? Ground probe and Oregon tort bleaching..

OK, in my new 100 gallon tank my Acan has not been looking very good. At first he was out and looking great, then he started to look a little strange. Then yesterday it looked as though he had been smashed and eaten in one area. I can only assume my long spined sea urchin did this. Do this sound...

    Switching to Kalkwasser

I previously have used sea lab blocks to maintain my calcium, but now that I am up to 200 gallon water these blocks are too expensive and I am looking to switching to kalkwasser. I really like the KISS approach and was planning on using a 5 gallon culligan container mounted above the tank, mix...

    Limestone MUD??

Sounds like a major PITA, I don't think I will explore any further. I might use some of the larger rock in my refigium for the pods to hang out and multiply or use some of this powder and mix with concrete to make in tank structures.

    Limestone MUD??

Actually, this limestone is known as the purest in the area, it is also mined in BC (Texada) and sold in Seattle (JA JACKS & SON & others). Probably the same stuff you had. And yes, it is very fine. Like flour.

    Limestone MUD??

    that is very informative regard the differing opinions on this miracle mud. I have a chemical analysis for the powder limestone we have. It is as follows: AL2O3 – 0.22%, CaO-56.47%, Cr2O3-<.01%, Fe2O3 - .08%, K2O - .02%, MgO - .27%, MnO - <.01%, Na2O - .07%, P2O5-.02%, SiO2-.61%, TiO2 - <.01%...

    Limestone MUD??

I am hoping to get the same benefits of a miracle mud refugium, mineral supplementation and denitration. Some of the same reasons people us kitty litter I guess, but with the added bonus of the calcium. All for free.

    Limestone MUD??

I have being trying to find a very cheap alternative to mineral mud (Miracle mud, whatever). I was thinking about trying local ocean mud and curing for a long time to kill off anything that can not live at 80 F. But I have concerns about pollution and not sure what I would gain. Then I started...

    80 Gallon Build

Only 150 watts for 80 gallons? I went with 1000 watts ( 2 x 400w MH and 2 x 96w PC) over my 100 gallon and could not be happier with my decision. I have enough light to grow any coral anywhere in the tank and I can already see new growth.

    AUTOMATIC water topoff

that is basically what I currently have in place exceopt with a drip valve instead of a float, but now with my total volume at 200 gallons the 5 gallons only lasts a couple days.
