how flat does my tank stand need to be?

I am finally setting up my 100 gallon but norticed that the stand got wet near the overflow and the wood swelled a little. The tank has a small gap under the edge in the back when placed on it. I am sure once filled with water it will sit flat, but concerned that this slight higher spot may...

Is 1000 watts of light for 100 gallon too much?

Well, belive it or not right now I have 400 watts over my ~ 10 gallon shallow tank and it is doing amazing! The tank is only 8" deep but is 24" x 36" so has as much surface area as much larger tanks. This tank is hooked up to my system of tanks and so far the heat had been helpful to maintain...

I need help with outlet configuration on 100 gallon tank

I am setting up my 100 gallon corner tank and need help with the outlet piping configuration. In the tank's previous setup, all they had was a 1" pipe with several 1/4" holes drilled in it. I am hoping to do something a little nicer, however, cost is a big factor and I can't spend much more or I...

Is 1000 watts of light for 100 gallon too much?

I already have the might and bulbs so I am going to go ahead and install it. I will start off with only having it on for a few hours at noon. I have 100 gallons in 5 tanks in my unheated basement, so the majority of hte year the heat will be helpful. Even in summer the temperature would only be...

that is really cool, hopefully some will live. Do you have a refugium? If so, what about scooping out some of the babies and putting in there away from preditors?

    Internal Overflow Level

I am setting up my 100 gallon corner tank and curious what is the best level to set the internal overflow at? I want to set the length (height) of the internal drain standpipe. I can't see how it matters. If I set it low, the water just falls further and may be noisy. Thanks for everyone's help...

tank installation - best way to set and level on wood floors

Yes, I am leaving everything in the basement (5 tanks) so I won't even have a sump under this tank, it will be downstairs. With 2 refigiums I hope to provide plenty of natural filtration/waste removal. Currently I am removing about a basketball size clump of cheato weekly. I have lots if you...

Is 1000 watts of light for 100 gallon too much?

thank you for your replies. I am am going to have mainly SPS, a few LPS, softies and clams under these lights. The SPS up high, clams too, and the LPS a little further down and softies in the lower light areas. I have a pentagon corner tank that is fairly tall so based on your replied I have...

Is 1000 watts of light for 100 gallon too much?

I have 2 x 400 Watt metal halides and 2 x 96 watt power compacts installed in the hood on my new 100 gallon corner reef tank. Do you think this is too much? Should I stagger the start times of each? If yes, how much? Appreciate input, Travis

    Looking for those with Harlequins

That sounds almost cruel. The starfish suffering like that. Would some look at this practice and animal abuse? The last thing I want is Pamela Anderson knocking on my door, well wait a sec. maybe that wouldn't be so bad :)

tank installation - best way to set and level on wood floors

I will reinforce the floor, although I feel that being in a corner along 2 load bearing walls it will be fine. As for the tiles on the floor, if time and money was not a factor I would love to do this, but this would delay this setup by maybe 1 year. So for now I am hoping to find some small...

    Looking for those with Harlequins

would harleqins work out at all in a large reef aquarium? With fish? Plus I don't want to release a choco ship star in there cause they are not safe. But did i understand corectlly that you can cut off a leg of the starfish and feed it to them? What about if I had a quiet corner set up for them...

tank installation - best way to set and level on wood floors

I am finally setting uyp my 100 gallon upstairs. Any input on the best way to level the tank? And should I put something down over hte wood, in case an overflow or something. Or set it up higher to allow the water to dry? Do you use wood shims? thanks so much! Travis

Best way to hook up my 100gallon tank to my "system"

thanks for your suggestion. I had actually already done this. Previously my Refugium was acting as the sump, but I now added another 30 gal tank that will be the sump. I connected the two together using a HUGE u-tube made out of 2" PVC. So big that I noticed my fish swimming up into it. Just a...

Best way to hook up my 100gallon tank to my "system"

The rock is cured and is currently in my tanks in the downstairs system. I also now don't feel that it will be an issue. Thinking through it while writing this post sort of convinced me. thanks for your input, Travis

Best way to hook up my 100gallon tank to my "system"

I have 5 tanks in my basement (including 2 refugiums) with total volume around 100 gallons. I am now moving forward on hooking up my new (used) 100 gallon tank upstairs. I was wondering what would be the best way to "tie" the systems together? I was planning to fill the upstairs tanks and...
