Quite possibly a dumb Live Rock question

I am not saying that people who "control" their environment have problems with controling their tanks. Control is a funny word, to me anyway. The tank is only "in control" as lang as you tinker with it. As soon as you stop adding things or taking things out, nature takes "control" and it will...

Quite possibly a dumb Live Rock question

If you have a new tank, I'd put it in and watch all the wonders come to life, I love the hobby because of the critters, the fish are just a nice perk. :) If you want a sterile RO/DI skimmed, medicated, antiseptic tank, boil the stuff and kill everything. There are always two views. I like...

    Interesting article

At least until some jerk introduces it into the trade on something else.

    Cyano??

Water flow and a clean-up crew of some sort fixed it for me. The flow of your power heads must not be reaching those spots. HTH, Monty

Does this also work for long tentacle anemones? Thanks, Monty

Well, water is cleared up. I didn't do anything. I am going to say algae. Thanks everyone for your advice and input. :) Monty

    cloudy water????

Thumbs up! I agree- Water changes or not, everybody will find a way to make it work if they really try. :)

    cloudy water????

Right, I did offer my opinion on his cloudy water. I also countered your "WOW!" comment, which was not connected to his cloudy water issue either. I normally don't debat issues, so I won't this either. I was just offering a hopefully positive pat on the back. :) Monty

    cloudy water????

It could be the floating algae that live in the water column. They may be replacing the lost numbers that you took out, to bring the system back in balance. I have a different view than most here, but if you have been running a successful tank for six months doing water changes every five...

    fish/tank compatiblity as a whole??????

Just post some pics when you're done. It should look pretty cool.

    White Water

I do add some additives, but not chemical filtration. I will eventually be adding alk & calcium as needed. I also add iodine additives for the invert molting, etc. Those are the only three things I ever added to my other tank, besides top-off water. It was doing great before I sold it...

Yes, it seems to take a little longer up front, but what a marvelous system nature is that it takes care of itself. You can look through history at instances where people have tried to manage nature, and what a mess we people have created! I watched people post here for a long time and I was...

The only pet store in 70 miles is Petco. I doubt they can test Calcium. Do you think they can?

I thought that a drip test was a "better" test kit. What should I be looking at?

The test kit brand is Hagen. I don't get shocked when I put my hand in, nothing appears to be faulty. The temp stays between 78 and 81.

The water does not smell. Short of buying a new Ca test, I can't really "check" it. What piece of equipment are we asking if it is "bad"? Thanks

Calcium is around 600 pH is ~7.9 to 8.1 Nitrites are 0 Nitrates are 0 Can't remember alk, but it is a normal acceptable range I also tested my well water calcium levels and it is 20 or less.

I would be totally shocked if it were sand. It is in both tanks. I'll see if I can get one (a pic) tonight.

    Don't know. Anybody know?

I actually have a phosphate test. I'll run it and see what my levels are. The reason I don't run all of that other stuff and I really try to avoid chemical help is that nature really can take care of our systems. I, and others that I know do it all the time this way. If we use some common...
