    pre mixed saltwater

I've been busy and haven't mixed up water change water. Does anybody know what kind of salt Saltwater City uses?

    Tank set up

I'm just being paranoid. With the head height AND the rather large number of elbows required to get from my sump to the display, the flow will be cut back dramatically. And the SCWD and I think the Mag5 will be pumping more water then the 9.5. I hope this is how it works out anyway. Any...

    Tank set up

I just want to make sure that my plan is a good one. The following is a (bad) drawing of something akin to what I want the plumbing on my tank to look like. The display is a 29g sloped BB with a 29g sump. The return pump is a Mag9.5 running through a SCWD (I gotta lose an a bit of that flow...

    Mag 5

So I was given a Mag 5...I think it works. I think I'm going to start out with this as my return pump from my sump (although I'd like a little more flow through my spray bar eventually). The tank is a 29g BB with a sloped bottom. The question is, it has metal screws and I swear on...

    Puget Sound Water

Pretty darn cheap... "The Seattle Aquarium now offers UVA-disinfected, filtered sea water for sale that can save you money! $35 gets you started and includes a $10 sign-up fee which gets you a reader card for the self-service valve, and $25 goes to prepayment of the saltwater at 5...

    Puget Sound Water

So the Seattle Aquarium sells sea water really cheap. It's run through course filters and a UV filter. It's salinity would be low and I'm sure it's a little on the chilly side. The upsides are cost and convience. Other then having to heat it and add a little salt, what are the downsides?

    Glass safe in Seattle

I moved here from CA, southern CA. I have never owned an acrylic tank. I had a 100, a 150, and a 90 gallon hex all do fine during the Northridge quake. Sure, the sloshing water made a mess on the walls, but it was easy to clean up.

    I may be dumb...hair algae

It looks something like Ancanthophora spicifera. It has a course wirey texture and is attached REALLY REALLY well to the rock. It branches like this Ancanthophora. The hair algae comes right off when I pick it off, not like this stuff. The discription with the photo describes this stuff as...

    I may be dumb...hair algae

I don't think it's bryopsis. I just looked that stuff up and boy am I happy it's not bryopsis. It's branched but nearly as much as any species I saw. It's wirey and hard but none seem to be longer then about an inch. If I could figure out how to take a decent picture of the stuff I'd do...

    I may be dumb...hair algae

I was concerned since the live rock is from an established tank that scrubbing might do unwanted damage. What do you mean, what do I mean by cooking? Cooking is the curing of live rock for several weeks to several months in the dark allowing time for all of the algae to die and to rot (along...

    Minor problem during stand construction

For that matter, a 1x2 would do the trick. If it's screwed and glues it should hold up just fine. At the same time, a piece of plywood would give a nicer look. I will be resting a Mag5 for the CL on the little shelf behind. Ugh, I really didn't feel like cutting a piece of plywood. Back...

    Local Fish stores ??

I was never at the old Saltwater City but am told it was bigger. It's on, I want to say, 124th on the north side of the street in one of the strip malls west of like Magnolia HiFi and the Salvation Army. I love there knowledge there and there live stock is at least as incredible as that of...

    Minor problem during stand construction

This is really a minor problem and I'm just looking for the easiest solution. I'm building a stand to house a 29g sump under a 29g main. This means that the I have 2x4 legs that run up the front and back of the stand and the sump fits between them on a 2x4 frame that is a little bigger then...

    I may be dumb...hair algae

And I have nothing to do at work today! Thanks Ed, I'm paying for RO/DI and my salinity and temp are close to the tank salinity and temp when the water is added. When changes are needed, they are made slowly. I have been alternating between water from the sound (I get it from the Seattle...

    I may be dumb...hair algae

Sorry, I was trying to avoid questions so I gave ALL of the info I had. I bought it with hair algae on it. I tried picking it off, but it's rather stubborn stuff. I'll try scrubbing harder tonight or tomorrow. I wish I had someplace to cook it, but that just ain't gonna happen. I don't...

    I may be dumb...hair algae

I think I did this for the challenge of it. I bought some LR for my tank yesterday. It looks great except for the hair algae. I do have the facilities to cook the rock so, I added this to my tank, which is far from established at this point, thinking biweekly water changes (5 gallons each)...

    skimmer ?

This discussion raised a question for me...what's the difference between wet and dry other then the water? With my understanding of the way a skimmer works, if you're getting a dry foam, wouldn't all of the 'stuff' that attaches to the bubbles stay on top and be pushed into the cup regardless...

    Need pump recomendation

I'll be running a CPR overflow box on 29gal tank. The overflow runs 800gph and I don't want to push that. I'll be running a smaller pump on a closed loop through a pair of cut down 100ml pipettes (once I figure out how to cut them) that will be aimed into the back corners of the tank. The...

    Need pump recomendation

I need to get water from my sump and back into my tank via a spray bar to help keep my BB nice and clean. I was, and may still be, considering a Mag7 but am trying to figure out if it's the best choice. It looks like the Mag7 will run 480gph through a 4 foot head. Granted, this doesn't...
