    reef vital DNA?

You took the words right out of my mouth Boomer:lol: Most hobbyists I've spoken to who have experimented with Marc Weiss products say it does little more than cause a nice algae explosion in their tanks with a bit of browning of coral tissue to go along with it. I personally have never used...

    Flying with livestock

That's another point...I wonder what the X-ray machine would do to the corals...it would be a shame to end up nukeing them... MikeS

    The grandson strikes again

That's a bummer Don...yeah, I bet the kid thought it was a great big wishing well, I've heard of that happening many times before.... My son is six now, so he knows better than to mess with my reef tank, but since it was set up before he was born, I had to child proof it as best I could...I...

    Flying with livestock

It's best to take them as carry-on, and package them in a container that will allow air to enter/escape, as the plane has a pressurized cabin...if you don't, you risk having the bag rupture... MikeS

    Which Nutrient/s feed Cyano?

I have no doubt that I've had both growing in my tank, and I'm sure I've mis-ID'd them from time to time as well:D But whenever I get a bloom of anything, I almost always see it in the high flow areas of the tank first, it seems to make little difference in my tank what it is in particular that...

looks like algae fuel to me....;) MikeS

    Which Nutrient/s feed Cyano?

Over the years I think I've seen just about every filimentous microfauna/flora in a varible rainbow of colors and textures you can imagine grow in my tanks:lol: Red, purple, green, blue, even jet black (the worst!). Sure, sometimes it's probably dinos, or assorted filimentous algaes, but...

    Which Nutrient/s feed Cyano?

While flow will help keep crud suspended in the water column where it can be used by corals and removed by skimming, the actual flow itself will not really inhibit cyano growth. I've seen it grow right on powerhead outlets many times before, and that's about as high flow an area as you can...

    Anyone recognize this hitchhiking crab?

With hitchiker crabs, it is often next to impossible to make a positive ID, even for a professional, because so many species are nearly identical. Better remove him to the fuge (or the toilet:badgrin:) just to be safe, as most crabs are omnivores. MikeS

    Fiberglass

Hey Boomer...a quick question.... I have acess to some fiberglass dowels (free of course:D ) that would be perfect for anchoring together live rock. My question is this...is there anything in fiberglass resin that may be reactive or leech bad things in salt water? Thanks... MikeS

    cool lionfish

Very interesting...never seen a lion with those markings...a color morph of Pterois radiata perhaps? Also not sure I understood your post...did they catch that thing in the wild up there, or what? MikeS

    Hitchhiker Crab

One of the many hazards of reefkeeping... Actually, when I find a crab, rather than destroy my reef trying to catch him, I watch him for a few days and figure out where he is hiding, then I give him a bit of the ol' turkey baster filled with boiling water...cook the little menace right in...

    Hitchhiker Crab

That is an "Eatus Expensivus Coralis" crab.... Making a positive ID on any hitchhiker crab is next to impossible, because so many different species are nearly taxonomically identical...best place for any hitchhiker crab caught in the tank is either the fuge or the toilet:badgrin: MikeS

I promise last sand bed question

Hi there When I added sand to my DSB, I'd add just a few cups a day, and very gently rake it into the existing sandbed...this kept me from having too much of a dieoff of microfauna due to smothering, kept burying of detritus to a minimum, and allowed the bacteria plenty of time to re-stratify...

    Chemistry of a FOLR tank

Yeah, if nothing else, for the sake of your fish's health...logically, the more closely we can duplicate the conditions these fish are used to in the wild as far as water chemistry, the more likely we are to have success with them in our aquariums. MikeS

    Chemistry of a FOLR tank

In a FOWLR I would test for all of the above, plus pH now and again. While alkalinity, Mg, and calcium are not of prime importance in respect to your fish, there are plenty of things growing on your LR that need them, like coralline algae and such. MikeS

    dwarf Zebra lionfish compatibility??

20 gallons is unfortunately too small for either a dwarf lion or a tang... As for compatibility...lions are not particularly agressive fish, but they do have a habit of eating any tankmate that will fit into its mouth... MikeS
