    help ID this crab

First, there are many species of crabs that are nearly identical in physical appearance to emerald crabs. Second, almost all crabs, emerald crabs included, are basically oppritunistic omnivores, meaning if there isn't enough of their prefered meal, they may just move on to the next easiest food...

    Tank Is Crashing Please Help!!

No.....you have enough weird stuff going on with your water as it is to start messing with that kind of thing. I'd do as Scooty suggested....tear everything apart in the main tank, clean it good, and start all over. MikeS

    Evil Emerald Crab!

Emerald crabs, athough reputed to be primarily herbivores, can be just as omnivorous as other crab species, which makes them a gamble to put in the tank. I have also read in the past that a large number of emerald crbs found in LFS's are not true emerald crabs, but are a more carnivorous...

    Tank Is Crashing Please Help!!

Yeah, accidently adding a detergent to your tank will definatly have some bad effects, it's a good rule of thumb to never use a detergent of any kind on anything that is going into the tank...I'm glad you isolated the probable cause....cleaning it with vinager will probably do the job, I would...

    hitchhiking crab

I've had good luck using plastic coke bottle traps...another method I have used in the past is to find out where the crab is hiding, and cook him right in his cave using a turkey baster full of boiling water.... MikeS

Yellow Tang and Purple Tang together?

My experience over the years is that tangs do well either individually or in groups of 3 or more. 2 tangs together is often a sure recipie for fights...I'm suprised you are able to house 2 yellow tangs peacefully together!:D I have also noticed that the size of the tangs seems to make a...

    Tank Is Crashing Please Help!!

Don't rush on getting rid of the live rock or sand or draining the main tank, since you don't know exactly what the problem is yet....just get the livestock safe for now until you can figure out what is going on in the tank...with the livestock removed you'll have some more time to diagnose the...

    Tank Is Crashing Please Help!!

very hard to say...I agree with the others...get the livestock out as soon as you can...if you don't have enough containers, maybe some fellow reefers in your area could help out? Maybe even call a few LFS and see if they have some tank space you could borrow for a few days..... MikeS

    Tank Is Crashing Please Help!!

A sterile environment shouldn't kill them...they might be stressed a bit from the water difference, but at least it's better than the toxic environment they are in now. MikeS

    Tank Is Crashing Please Help!!

I think the carbon should help a bunch...use lots of it and change it out often until you stop seeing the problems in the tank.... Scooty's recommendation of moving the livestock out of the tank is a good one, I'd do that if you can.... MikeS

the good the bad and the ugly of power compacts

Hmmmm...I really don't see anybody telling him to do anything like that in this thread...I do see people presenting T5's as a better alternative than PC's for a starter light setup, and giving some good reasons for it. Given the comparitive price of both setups, and the basic superiority of...

    Tank Is Crashing Please Help!!

Very sorry to hear about the tank, I hope what you have left will be ok until tomorrow. Sounds like there isn't much more you can do tonight...are the lights off? If not, I'd turn them off, that will help lower the stress level of the fish a bit...it's not much, but it may help. Make sure you...

the good the bad and the ugly of power compacts

PC's will work ok for softies, but like the others have stated, later down the road you are likely going to have to upgrade to T5's, VHO's or MH's (or a combo). Even if you plan on just softies, they will generally do better under T5's ect than PC's. Also there is an astetic issue...most don't...

    Tank Is Crashing Please Help!!

Sounds to me like a toxic contamination problem...is there any way something toxic may have accidentally been introduced into your tank? In the meantime, if you have activated carbon, now is the time to use it, and lots of it! Keep us updated.... MikeS
