    Guide to fraging RTBA

Yeah, all I was looking for was a purpose for the LD study as I understood and was all for the propagation bit? I know that in the research I have done, if you want grant money and if you want to get through the reviewing process, you have to have a legitimate purpose and/or goal for your...

    Guide to fraging RTBA

I don't see the value in this empirical data, because even your salinity and temp. were not accurately measured. I find it to be no different than placing the RBTA in tomato soup for 4 hours, not observing death, and then offering it as empirical evidence stating that tomato soup does not kill...

    Guide to fraging RTBA

I will echo what others have said. Making any conclusions based on a single incidence with very few "controlled" and "measurable" variables is tedious at best (that is, if you are a fan of the scientific method). It seems that you are more playing mad scientist just to see what happens. I...

    Guide to fraging RTBA

While I certainly defer to the experts, I would assume it is not much different than fragging a coral (from a "pain" standpoint). A meshwork of nerve cells, no central nervous system, etc... In fact, it is probably less "cruel" than killing a roach or other arthropod. Ultimately and as far...

    Tang advice

Not that I condone it, but I "got away" with putting a foxface rabbitfish in my 55. IMVHO, they are the best teleost for taking out nuisance algae (that is reef safe, stays relatively small, etc...). Their diet seems to be a bit more diverse in captive systems, but can be real stress balls...

    Garlic with Fish Food Question?

A Q/T tank is optimal, but since it appears one is not cycled in your case... In a similar case, I have cured acute ich infections in my tank with garlic suppliments and cleaner shrimp (couldn't tell you which is more effective). However, once I had a Q/T tank setup, I removed and quarantined...

    How Do You Acclimate Corals?

Depends on where they come from... If they are overnighted, then I will acclimate pretty slowly. If they took a 15-30 minute car ride from the LFS to the tank, then I am less concerned with acclimation (unless there is a huge differencein salinity).

    Pet supply liquidator

I have purchased the 2X13W PC "hoods" from them for a refugium. I waited a week, no arrival, finally emailed them and they apparantly had forgotten (no big deal). I never got a tracking number or anything, and communication was pretty poor. However, I did recieve my product and was fairly...

    what about garf?

To be honest, I probably followed the GARF method more than any other when setting up and running my reef tank (it is a bit dated now perhaps, but I still value much of their methodology). I agree with the above statement that they are more involved in progressing the profession (I would be...

PLEASE be honest when you post

What Mike said... Elitism is lame and often very deconstructive (not to say that is what the original poster implied, but that could be the genesis of the posed ideology). To be honest, I don't know many that would ever post knowledge that they trully know to be false or irresponsible. We all...

    My notes from Bob Fenner

Yeah, I almost spit out my coffee reading Fenner's remarks this AM. Perhaps a bit of editorializing was done in relaying his statement? I definitely would need to hear the context of this message. I also agree that the various reefs around the globe are high in biodiversity and ultimately...

    Quarantine tank

Thats where my thinking lead me as well. As long as the concentration gradient does not get lower outside of the (marine) fish, then I suppose it would not be too detrimental to its normal physiological processes short term. One thing I have learned is that my own intuition doesn't always...

    Quarantine tank

I guess I more look at it from an evolutionary standpoint. If this were the case, why is it not more succesful for freshwater fish to live in marine environments and marine fish to live in freshwater environments? I mean, all this energy expenditure seems highly inefficient if in fact there...

    Sailfin (Desjardin) Tang compatibility

If money were not an issue (within reason), what one other tang would you add with a Sailfin in a 180. Having never had tanks over 55 gallons in the past, my tang experience is lacking. I have debated a powder blue or a purple, but would love to hear any other ideas. I would like to obtain a...

    Quarantine tank

Interestingly, it seems a faculty member here (Dr. Edward Noga) is a proponent of hyposalinity treatment and has written a few books discussing it (amongst other things). I might pick his brain on the issue if I have a chance... It does seem to be a bit of a controversial subject...I had no...

what is too much temp swing on a daily basis

I have found that just directing fan flow on the water (whether it be in the sump or on the show tank) does a nice job of cooling down a tank. You would be surprised at the power of evaporative cooling. I used used those small, clip on fans (used in dorm rooms) and placed it in the sump. As...
