    info on acrylic tanks

Gordo's tank is a SeaClear, sold by The Fish Store in Seattle and others. I also have a 10-yr-old 50gal and 13-yr-old 15gal hex all made by them, without any problems at all so far.

    How to feed my fish

My lawnmower blenny is a real carnivore, I've had him for 2 years. He usually beats the Anthias pack to the mysis shrimp I throw in, eats a few, and then sits back with a big one like it is a cigar. After a while he starts back mouthing the liverock again. I love his "antlers" too.

    Red algae around rock basis

I constantly fight a "red algae" that is not cyano, more a wimpy hair type. It seems to be strongly associated with my red Gracilaria macroalgae, perhaps even some form of it's growth. If you are talking a fuzzy type, instead of slimy, I don't have an answer but share your pain. I love the...

    Lettuce Nudibranch

I have had two of these for a few weeks and they are visibly growing. I see them in the hair algae "fields", but do not hang out there like you might expect. Watching closely, I do not see the hair algae being eaten, just mouthed. I suspect that they (at least these) are eating microalgae...

I can bring a 3x20W NO 24" fixture (modified from an old 1x20W Seaclear 50 gal fixture)

    6 gal eclipse lighting

There are various test meters at Radio Shack, or you could try the "old lick the finger" approach like I did and see if it hurts.... By the way ankjones, I was born and raised on the westside of Indianapolis, Ben Davis H.S. class of '76, but I haven't been back in 20 years.

    6 gal eclipse lighting

I would just add beware of the Eclipse pumps shorting out. I recently started losing camel shrimp in a 6 gallon Eclipse jail I kept in the kitchen for bully fish. I couldn't figure out why I was losing a shrimp every 2 days, and the fish were hiding. Scrubbing and siphoning, I happened to touch...

    Dripping corals good?

I did install a refugium/ reverse photosynthesis DSB sump about 6 months ago and everything loves it. The dripping showed up about 2 months ago. I will have to get off my duff and test everything. If this is something unusual I will get on it and report back.

    Dripping corals good?

One of them now has a drip over 7" long (see new picture below, just to the right of the Anthias). Water parameters are pretty typical, I do run salinity a little rich at 1.025, 78 degrees, all the Kent additives, kH a little low at times, Ca++ also a little low at times (lazy me). If you look...

    Dripping corals good?

I have a 120 gal reef under lots of power compacts, refugium, great live rock etc... and everything appears healthy. Recently, my candy canes, closed brain, and other unknown species have started dripping. The drips get carried off and start new polyps, and I have successfully got some to...

    Teclima CA200 chiller is poor

 I have run this chiller for 3 days now, and am pretty disappointed with it. Not only is it definately not as quiet as claimed, the higher pitch is extremely irritating and seems to pierce the walls especially well. I lay in bed and hear it out in the living room all night. Mostly...

    corals like electricity !

I am convinced you are doomed either way. I recently started losing camel shrimp in a 6 gallon Eclipse jail I keep in the kitchen for bully fish. I couldn't figure out why I was losing a shrimp every 2 days. Scrubbing and siphoning, I happened to touch my metal sink and suddenly my the...

    corals like electricity !

Throw out those grounding probes, a new study shows that corals like low voltages! They are using electric cables running out to metal grids placed in the ocean to help restore damaged coral reefs in Indonesia. Limestone (calcium and magnesium I assume) first forms on the metal, and later...

    mushrooms moving....?

I've got those thread like tube worms (?) as well. I think they are beautiful, and a welcome addition. Never seen my seahorses or anything else avoid them etc...

    Good place for plumbing supply

We have a very unusual hardward store down here in Olympia called Olympia Supply. It has lots of oddball stuff, even bulkheads. Surely there must be one of these oddballs in every large town? I keep a large supply of extra fittings in my closet so I have them at 2am if needed. Saved my bacon...

How does your family feel about your saltwater aquarium hobby?

I started dating a new woman last year, and was afraid of bringing her back to my one bedroom apartment with 5 tanks going. I gulped hard, explained that I was a biologist, and that I used to live in a much larger place. See, it was only natural to have all this, and with the windows open it...

    Plate Coral is dieing

I also have had a couple nice plate corals die, usually within 2 weeks of showing any symptoms. My remaining one is florishing now that I stuff a few mysis shrimp down it's maw every couple of weeks. Open brains and hairy mushrooms also now doing much better with feeding meaty foods, not just...

Tank Moving Tips - I NEED 'EM!

moving a tank If I had it to do all over again, I would create as many individual coral "lifeboats" as possible. Rubbermaid tubs and styros from the store work good, but I suggest individually isolating your truely prized specimens. I lost and/or damaged many corals due to what I think were...
