    RO/DI water question.

Personally I use Instant Ocean. I think it has better quality control than the others. I would really do some research before using that salt. With that being said, I always test my ready made salt water to ensure the alkalinity, calcium and magnesium are at the same level as the tank water...

    water?

I find it's much easier to have the RO/DI system in your house. This way you can control the water you put into your tank. I boought the Typhoon III from Airwaterice.com. It's a very good unit and I use it frequently. I have it mounted in my garage. I keep 3 brute 44 gallon garbage cans in my...

    Testing water

It depends on the size of your tank. Generally you don't have to wait very long. Most folks have a lot of flow and it does not take long to mix it all up. I would think that 1/2 hour is plenty of time for almost all reasonably sized tanks. Regards, Pat

    Tank leak insurance question

I agree with Reefreak, insurance should only be used for major, major problems not a tank leak. I keep my insurance deductable at $1,000.00 and would only make a claim if the damage exceeded several thousand dollars. Once you make a claim, especially for a smaller claim, your rates will go up...

    skimmer question

Nitrate is not a worry if you are not going to have a reef tank. If all you are going to have is fish and not corals the you can manage nitrates by water changes. Nitrate does not bother fish too much. However if you are gong to have corals you will need to manage the nitrates as close to zero...

Help ASAP - PH and skimming issue

I would also question your ph level. Are you using a monitor or a test strip. Typically tanks do not have high ph problems. Most often they suffer from low ph. I would double check your testing method and make sure your probe is freshly calibrated before making changes. It's happened to me...

    Low Alk problem

With a low ph I would not recommend baking soda. It has a tendancy to lower ph although it does tend to recover after a time. If you want to save money you can bake the baking soda at 300 degrees for 1 hour and then it will have a tendency to raise alkalinity. There is more informtion here...

    HELP----melting xenia!!!!

I would agree that you are poisoning your critters. There is no good way to measure iodine so there is no way to know how much you have in the tank. I would not add anything that you cannot test for. I only add calcium, alkalinity and magnesium. If you want to know the correct parameters for...

    Low Alk problem

You can use baking soda to raise your alk. You should also test for calcium and monitor your ph. Here is a calculator to help. http://jdieck1.home.comcast.net/chemcalc.html I hope this helps. I don't think low alk and salinity are necessarily connected. You do need to have your salinity at...

    First Real Algae Problem

I just found the gonipora web site. Seems like I may be in trouble on this specimen. Very diffiult to keep and it appears that most don't last a year in the tanks. Darn, it kind of ticks me off. Granted I should have done the reseach in advance but the LFS did not offer any insight into the...

    First Real Algae Problem

The live rock was not cycled in the tank. I used cured rock only. Regards, Pat

Identify type of Waving Hand Coral

I have some in my tank as well. 4251cpd are you saying this is a weed? Is it something that should not be in a tank? Mine is only 2 1/2 weeks since put in the tank and it seems to be doing well. That sounds like a bad thing. Is it that difficult to control? I have what I call Pulsing Xenia...

    First Real Algae Problem

Is this good algea? This looks like good algae. It's some type of macro. If it's a good kind and I get a grazer type snail, this will be toast. What do you guys and gals think? Here is another view.

    First Real Algae Problem

I do have some macro algae that is growing in the tank as well. I think it is good algae. I will post a few photos of it in a little bit. But I really don't care that it get eaten if the bad stuff goes with it. Thanks for the heads up. Regards, Pat

    First Real Algae Problem

I think the turbo snails might not be a bad idea. I will try that. I have some snails but they are not turbos and other than that algae I don't have much else to eat in the tank. It's actually pretty clean. I think I will get one and see what happens. Thanks for the help. Regards, Pat
