    I need an I.D. please

Low light is about 50 PAR which equals HO florescent lighting at 20"-25". Low flow is little to no polyp movement. At 700+ PAR (700 PAR is a 400W halide driven by a 430W ballast at 15"-20") you get little polyp extension and slow growth. Regards, Kevin

    I need an I.D. please

Hello, I moved this thread to here because the coral in question is a soft coral not a SPS coral. The coral is most likely from the genus Pachyclavularia and I would guess the species to be P. violacea. It does best in low to moderate light (50-250 PAR) and low to moderate flow. Can be fast...

    Acro Eating Nudi's Treatment

Hello, I have not seen any Acropora eating nudibranch only ones that eat Montipora. I have seen flatworms that eat Acropora. Levamisole dewormer has been used to treat the flatworms in a separate container. High concentration iodine dips have had some success with both pests. Iodine dips are...

Water Parameters Changed when my lighting changed.....

Hi Randy, You can high PH and very low alkalinity and visa verse. When we speak of alkalinity in reef keeping we are talking about total carbonate hardness (which is what your test kit is measuring). High CO2 levels will cause PH to drop but not change alkalinity. High fish load can also cause a...

Green star polyp out of the water

Hello, They will only survive about 20 min. or so out of water. Regards, Kevin

    SPS Flesh Peeling/lifting from Skeleton

Hello, From my experience I would not recommend dosing iodine unless you can get your hands on a test kit that can accurately measure it +-.01 ppm. Cheers, Kevin

    SPS Flesh Peeling/lifting from Skeleton

Hello, I'm fairly confident that lighting is not the issue. Too high of light and the corals will respond in hours not months. Too low light and the corals might change colour or grow slow but will not die. I have found it quite surprising under how low light levels corals will live (and...

    SPS Flesh Peeling/lifting from Skeleton

Hello, I think most SPS keepers would like to maintain your water parameters :) The numbers you have posted are pretty much identical to what I recommend and run. Good job, and I don't think that 6 hours of full light is too short. I don't like to keep soft corals with LPS and SPS in the same...

    Recipe for Oxypora "chalice" recovery?

I agree. These corals expand more and look much better in low intensity and high kelvin temperature lighting. Regards, Kevin

    New Clam Showing "Pinched" Mantle?

Hello, The picture was a success :) . I do not believe it is pinched mantle. I've owned the clam for 6+ months and it was fine. I would keep an eye on it and make sure nothing is nipping at the mantle for a week or so. You can always bring it back if it worsens and I will keep it for a while. It...

    Isopods??

I think neither but rather some other type of creature. Regards, Kevin

    Isopods??

All the Isopods I have seen in reef tanks look more like tiny horseshoe crabs or beatles.

    Isopods??

Hi Randy, Those are not Isopods. They are quite common in most reef tanks and harmless.

    Help ID'ing a few corals...

Hello, Identifying Acropora down to the species level can be nearly impossible. If you are looking for common names then maybe you can find where the original purchasers got them and then look up their names that way. The first coral looks like Acropora abrolhosensis but a bit more thin (This...

    Hammerhead Coral Questions

Hello, Thank you for your detailed post. Most LPS (large polyp stony) corals retract at night. This is perfectly normal. They do not retract for long periods during the day unless something is irritating it. Most fish avoid contact with stinging corals but sometimes do get stung. It usually...

Water Parameters Changed when my lighting changed.....

Hi Randy, Glad to hear you are getting good growth from your tank. You have a few paths to choose to boost your levels. You could manually dose. This is less automatic but still effective. Not really too much a pain once you get a pattern established. You could increase your co2 bubble rate. I...

Dwarf Fu Man Chu Lionfish with an SPS Coral Aquarium?

Hello, Chaetomorpha algae is a good choice (about $5). An aluminum bell shaped fixture with a 32W CF bulb and clamp on the end bought at Lowe's or Home Depot costs about $20 and will work fine. Regards, Kevin

    Getting ready to add SPS

Hello, I do not like to see the temperature exceed 80F. I think it will be easier to keep the calcium at 400-425ppm and the alkalinity at 8-9dKH. Magnesium at 1300-1400ppm will make it less of a challenge to keep the calcium and alkalinity from bouncing around (read more stable). Cheers, Kevin
