    Close friend died, please read

Hey, I know that it is greatly appreciated, thanks for the kind words and prayers. We had the funeral yesterday, and it filled the whole sanctuary, he really impacted a lot of people. I really miss him . . .

    Close friend died, please read

Last week, one of my best friends, Kevin Wood died suddenly and unexpectedly of an aneurysm. He was only 33 and leaves behind a wife, 10 month old daughter, 3 year old daughter, and 12 year old son. We were going to school together at Eastern Washington University, and met up nearly daily to...

So fitting that your SN is "alki". ;)

    running sump without cheato ?

Be careful. Vodka dosing isn't really a long term solution. If you have a pump fail and water oxygenation is lowered, its common to get a tank crash when dosing vodka as the bacteria are consuming the vodka aerobically and thus taking lots of O2 out of the water column. The same happens if...

two spot hogfish killing my hector's goby

I'm going to borrow a fish trap tomorrow and try to trap the guy. Catching him is pretty much impossible with the amount of rock in the tank. I put a big lump of chaeto from the refugium in the tank, as well as a big net, the idea being that the net will possibly scare the other fish enough...

What fish would you guys put in a 45 cube?

Brandy- I've got a pair of banggai's in my tank, and they really are fun to watch. Mine get along great with everything, and are inseparable. I'm keeping my finger's crossed that maybe I have a male-female combo and perhaps I'll be able to raise some fry down the road . . .

What fish would you guys put in a 45 cube?

purple firefish are a favorite of mine. Even without sand it should be able to find a dart hole in the rock somewhere. If you didn't mind only having room for another fish or two, I'd also recommend a dwarf angel of some sort. Flame angels are pretty stunning. I also love blenny's, tailspot...

two spot hogfish killing my hector's goby

He better not take a liking to ornamental shrimp. I have 2 skunk cleaner's and 2 fire shrimp. If he attacks them I'm gonna feed him to the cat . . . Anyway, all 4 shrimp are of good size, so that lessens the risk, however, I did just see the hogfish attack the hector's and then charge one of...

two spot hogfish killing my hector's goby

I just added a Hector's goby yesterday to my 75, and within minutes of introducing him, my two-spot hogfish began harrassing and attacking the little guy immediately. It's now been over 24 hours and the hector's has been hiding in the same corner for about 23 of those hours. He won't come up...

    New Refugium

I have some chaeto as well, if you'd like, lol. I guess it just depends who you're closest too. I'm on the south hill near Ferris HS. As for lighting, I am using the home depot spiffy: http://www.melevsreef.com/fuge_bulb.html Cheap and highly effective. Anyway, PM me if you want to drop...

    Pictures

hey cool, another starry blenny. I have one and love the little guy, energetic, comical, and their muted but interesting color scheme is a lot better than a lawnmower blenny. Love the ricordea pics, those are such cool inverts . . .

Algae choking AGA reef ready overflow

yeah, and from what people tell me, its going to happen inevitably. I've actually got an idea though, I'm going to see if I can extend a "fish guard" up from the top of the overflow to hopefully mitigate that possibility.

Algae choking AGA reef ready overflow

yeah, I should just probably view it as a mini refugium/algae scrubber. What worries me is that my starry blenny has been spending a lot of time trying to get the bryopsis on the other side through the slats, I fear he might just jump back there and never come out, lol, he'd be in paradise . . .

Algae choking AGA reef ready overflow

My recently acquired 75 gallon came with one of those slick overflows that AGA/Aqueon has been making for a while now. As with most fresh setups, there were some algae problems, but it appeared as though that had died down. Until I looked in the overflow. It is a veritable swamp of bryopsis...

    Large Angels

or when you're trying to look down into the tank at the frag rack to see what frags you would like to scuttle home with . . . he's good at blocking that too. :) He even turned his body sideways to block as much of my vertical vantage point as possible, kind of as if to say "this aiiiiin't gonna...

How much money to drink skimmer juice?

And all it takes is one dead palyzoa to have had its innards brought into the cup and you die of palytoxin. Likely? Probably not. But possible enough I'd never try it for any amount of money? Absolutely. Hint: palytoxin is a superpowerful neurotoxin found in paly's . . . Not a pleasant way to die.

    clean up crew .

I agree that the term ''hermit crab'' is synonymous with "reef terrorist". I only have 5 or so in my 75 gal, and they were mostly stowaways on the rock I bought. Even that few though sometimes cause problems like upending frags, killing a few snails (I've lost quite a few margarita snails to...

    Emerald Crab and Bryopsis

I have had conchs that will eat it regularly (I have one right now that just loves the stuff), but they are rather limited in what they can reach. If its high up on live rock they can't really get there.

    Looking for the best Refugium

In the same conversation I had with Kevin, he talked about how it is not unusual for him to see those micro brittlestars come flying out of the return line whole. If they can make it through, I'm sure quite a few pods and such get through.

    Looking for the best Refugium

Kevin at Aquatic Dreams has said that its actually not very true, the critters actually have a pretty high survival rate coming through the pumps. My refugium is under the tank, and plenty make it through. Sure, flowing into the tank would be more efficient, but it is far from making them useless.
