Reef Aquarium & Tank Building Forum

Help Support Reef Aquarium & Tank Building Forum:

Thank you i have been reading different threads and agree about many craftsman here at RF. I am looking forward to learning some new things here and will share my ideas freely.

This is my smallest refugium backpack DSR 50 design it has a skimming first champer along with gravity drain. I showed them on my old web site with air stone skimmer, 250gph pump, nice shape piece of live rock, sand, small piece macro algae, and a pair peppermint shrimp. Lighting was from DT.

* DSR 50 design is 17 years old.

Hope you enjoyed a blast from the past:)

This is my muti elevation sand bed and pvc structure to be covered by my rock work.

It even has skylights:)

I will use 4 to 5 mm rock size in raised sand beds so water can move throught them. I used doubled egg crate and double fiber glass window screen to hold sand and rock weight.

I will only use 2" 1.5 to 2.5 mm of sand in tank as i have a 100 gallon remote DSB.

Got you thinking:) then i did my job!lol

Here is my old 750 gallon tank with raised rock structure using 3" acrylic tubes and doubled egg creat to hold 2,000 lbs of branch rock off sand bed.
NOTE the reflection of the frag tanks on the right side of picture.......the year 1994. It was my LPS coral that Albert J. Thiel propagated at MACNA X, i believe it was the first time most hobbiest ever saw that done to an LPS coral. Also shown is NNR sand bed with 600lbs live sand.

Sorry picture quality is not that good, this was just starting to add corals after cycle.

Starting to dry fit feeds for close loop pumps now finished i will remove for painting. As you may have guessed by now my system is color coded and once finished you will be able to see what goes to what:) * Sight glass between pump inlets was removed to prevent scratches.

+1 about the skilled craftsman here! So all ur sand/cc and rock is going on that structure? hmm... i say cc cuz ur old school from the sounds of it. Awsome how that stuff u posted is from 15+ yrs ago. I though it was all undergravel ans such. Ill b watching :)

Hello,

More stuff getting closer:) I finished dry fitting and painting my pump feed for my close loop along with painting parts needed to build my return pump manifold that will feed the top (4) inlets. Also finished my screens for my reactors(have changed them a few time) i like these.

Do you have a discount card For Krylon Paint????
I like the different colors.
Would like to see a full pic of the reactor.
How are you going to cover the structure for you raised coral beds?

Yeah $ 4.99 cash card each time i buy a can or two well maybe 20:) Been painting my builds for 20 years alot more work but sure looks nice when finished. I will be using black spa flex on some parts should look killer(don't tell Bill lol).
I will cover pvc structure using 5 rock columns drilled to go around uprights, then silicon rubble/5mm sand around sand bed edges and finish off using branch rock. Once finished should not be able to see pvc that's the plan anyway:)
I will take some pictures and post asap:)

Yeah i am a detail minded person(AAA)JK I am a building contractor so i deal with lot's of details all the time, so it kinda goes into everything:) You know what fingernails on a chalk board does to some people that's how glue drips or primer runs do for me....lmao
One of the reasons i started doing refugiums was i wanted what was under the DT to be just as nice to look at and watch.
My last two cents on this is way does 90% of reefers spend thousands of dollars on the best of everything and then throws together the plumbing. It's not even a thought to do customized plumbing so it is at the same quality as all the equipment.....kinda funny:)

And that is why they make 51 flavors:) It's a fine line between Detail and ..........Krazy/:

The back purple valve 1 of 4 (color of return plumbing) with 1" black spa flex, while the front blue valve 1 of 8(color of close loop plumbing) with 1" black spa flex.

Spinner, You do realize you are supposed to use those rattle cans in a WELL ventilated area... Did maybe sometime in the past you forgot to open a window??? LOL

It is looking good.. Details are everything!!!! Seen or not seen

I spray of paint on a fitting and two sprays on the rag i am holding up to my nose...................lol

Here is a couple of pick's of my 6' x 1 1/2" manifold that is feeding the open part of my build. The Dart pump sits 5' lower than the manifold which is feeding (4) 1" inlets with (1) on each of the back ends of DT and (2) flowing straght down.
It is dry fitted, now to take apart, paint wait (7) day's then glue.
* Manifold show white flex pvc(first time ever using) will be using BLACK at final install.

Now Now, sometimes function will out way looks LOL
It is a hard balancing act to pull off sometimes. If you can handle the flow loss, the 90s look better, But the spaflex will help the flow rate. Will any body see it????

Yeah not that worried about lost flow with the 90s. My lighting will hide the manifold from the front and that stuff is the part i like about my system built to work and play with.
