Reef Aquarium & Tank Building Forum

Help Support Reef Aquarium & Tank Building Forum:

Really? Doing away with the classifieds? I have stayed out of this as a new member here, but I wouldn't like to see them go. There are always deals to be had, someone upgrading or gettingout for some reason. Is that my reason for signing up? No. Do I worry about the 50/90 rule? Nope. When it comes it comes, and it won't be the first place I go either.

Classifieds yes, sales forums no, they are two different things.

How do you figure I was spamming the board? Although most of my comments are short I read every thread and commented accordingly. I stayed up until almost 5am reading those treads so it's not fair to make false accusations on an assumption... So apparently my comments are considered spam? Lol

Besides I was never trying to post anything for sale in the classifieds. I was trying to look into getting a used tank for a reasonable price and lighting. I'm sure a lot of reefers in the community wouldn't mind helping a reefer get back into the hobby amd making some $$ selling stuff they no longer use or need.

sounds like you read our rules good deal

Sounds like everything you were trying to do was get at the sales forums without regards to the rules.
Not exactly making a case for being a member here.

Wow, sorry, I guess this has sort of ran a bit out of control. I do understand the points made about how the site makes money from sponsors adds and I'm not really arguing that that should be changed. I never stated that I was looking to sell, just looking to buy. I did spend a lot of time on the board when I had my tank up a few years back, but as I said before, the site is organized and everything is written so well that most of my questions were answered by searching on my own.

Don't want to create another fire storm by suggesting this, but maybe before the 50 post mark, new members could view classifieds but not be able to post there own? I really find comfort in getting items from people off the forums over craigslist or ebay,

I guess like I said before, I just use the forum differently than others, I would pm mostly and liked to just go and meet people face to face rather than talk a bunch in the forums. I'm not saying one way is better than the other, just saying that my way doesn't necessarily mean that I'm not involved in the community. I value this site and all the people I have met and information I received from it.

I can't make the software do that, it is either all or nothing or else I would. I don't want to have a police site, the last thing I have time for is daily complaints to deal with. No matter what we do it won't stop, we tried open forum for years, it was stupid crazy and flame wars it required the staff to deal with that daily all day. We just want a quiet place to learn and share and sell extra stuff when they upgrade or whatever but people took advantage of that and wanted even more. It isn't our responsibility if someone gets ripped off in a private trade or sale.

I figured as much, just thought I would ask. It wasn't my intention to bash the way you have the board set up, just to ask the reasoning behind it. Sorry if any of my posts came off in that way.

I guess on the bright side, I won't be able to just jump right back into reefkeeping. Although I have spent a lot of time thinking about what I want to do this time around, it's really easy to impulse buy and that is when things can go wrong.

J.,

when you do make the jump back to saltwater, we will be here to assist/share information any way we can..
this is the primary reason of the site---to help fellow hobbyists. :D

Wow,

Pretty interesting thread here and pretty sad to see what is going on with this site now. I joined here many years back and have been out of the hobby for years and would not have expected a thread upsetting folk like this.

As a software/product designer for the last 20+ years this discussion comes down to the simple question we always ask. What do our users want?

Yes - the main value of this site is the knowledge base. But…
If users also see a very high value to the marketplace on this site then setting up barriers to that equals loosing users.

I do not believe the two above are mutually exclusive. There is a way to have a vibrant marketplace and a vibrant forum to discuss all of the issues with this hobby.

I hope this post does not anger anyone. I was really excited to be back into the hobby and had not realized how things had changed here. I may be off base due to lack of context on what happened with the sales forums.

You are certainly missing out on lots of the reasons, over the years things change, competing with social media is difficult enough, and that is just one reason, the others was abuse but you missed all that by not being here. Sponsors keep the site running, and that was abused by some so we tried many, many ideas, it is very time consuming and running a site for over a decade it takes a lot of effort you obviously don't see. The social media is the biggest obstruction these days, fast, down and dirty is how it apparently goes. It is sad because we was a growing family site and still we strive to make it as user friendly as possible, your mentioned obstructions even if was completely freed up isn't what is hurting forums, won't make much of a difference, tried it over and over throughout the years and this what is in place seems to work the best, stick around maybe you'll understand :D

There are definitely more "rules" than there have ever been, but Reef Frontiers is definitely the best NW fish forum.

These rules haven't been increased in the last 7/8 years other than easing them more and more, not that anybody ever reads them anyways LOL.

I go on other forums such as reef 2 reef and the NW forum and I do not have any trouble viewing items for sale, why this one?
