500 Gallon SPS Dominant Zeovit

The alk of DI water is close to 0. Also, I don't think our test kits have the ability to test for alk or pH in DI water.

I'm pretty sure once you get your TDS down to 0 the PO4 will follow.

Thanks for chiming in Mike. But whats weird is with my saltwater mixing at 1.023 my alk is suppose to be between 7.3-7.7 and its reading 9 and I don't know why.

Rolling the bucket could difinitely help. I had a similar experience when I was using Oceanic in a bucket.
Are you matching temp before testing SG. Also, what are you using to test SG and Alk? Some alk kits are known to give higher readings.

Just curious why you're targeting a specific gravity number rather than aiming for salinity of 35ppt.

ZeoVit has tanks in the 1.024 range. And depending on the salt it has the parameters for different salinities. I like my tank around 1.024-1.025 range. I mix my salt using 200 gallon bags and I mix it all at once.

ZeoVit has specific number to achieve. They basically want parameters close to NSW levels. Maybe I'm just going to far but I'm just trying to get things stable.

How long are you letting it mix before testing? I like to leave things 24 hours before I test, just to be sure its completely mixed and settled or whatever. No idea if it really makes any sense or not... (other than most mixing instructions I've read said to do so)

Well, I'm definitely not going to challenge the Zeo heads. Every tank I've seen is beautiful. It's just easier for me to think in terms of salinity. I assume you're using the same kits they've used.

Looking back over your post. I think I would fix the 65ppm ro/di issue and retest everything.

I have replaced all the filters and now its reading 0 TDS. Just have to wait it out as usual.

I let my salt mix atleast 24 hours. The salt had been mixing a few days when I got those readings but found out that the RO/DI issue might have added to the alk issue since the other parameters fell in line.

I read a post by Randy once (faint memory) about pH and alk being an issue when 'storing' saltwater... seem to remember something about not heating it until you are ready for it, but I don't remember enough detail for it to be actually useful. If things don't even out I may be able to find that again (or google might find it for you).

Well that's good news. Hopefully it will have an effect on everything.

Lets hope.

I try to keep mine around 77 degrees. My bins are in the garage so doing that sometimes is a challenge depending on the season.

No real update for the tank except i performed a small 100 gallon water change on my DT and a 40 gallon water change on my QT tank that I used from my DT. This is normally performed on Sundays but I waited until today as I will be going under the knife again tomorrow morning and I will be out of commision for about another month. I have members from my reef club coming through the following week to help with my water changes as I wont be able to lift anything for a while. I will be lurking during my recovery so I wish everyone well.

Good luck on your surgery and hoping you have a quick recovery. Your fish need you. I hope it's nothing serious.

Thanks. It was a hernia surgery. I think I need the fish more than they need me. I should move my bed in front of my tank.

Well, moving your bed in front of your tank, hmmmm, I can't see anything wrong with that. You need one of those tanks like they built on "Tanked", where the whole tank surrounded the headboard. So cool. Get well soon, Wayne.

Sea Swirls

I have been looking at getting the sea swirls,,,,,again. Since my returns are already 1 1/2", should I get the same size or buy the 1" model. Something for yall to think about. No quick response is needed.

I've never looked at sea swirls until I started building my 300. After a little research I found several reefers complaining of problems with the internal gears failing. But, the 1 1/2 models are built differently. They have a straight through pipe and there were some O-rings and seals removed. Supposedly a much better unit. So far, only a few months, they have worked great for me. I can't remember if you have a screen over your tank. If so you'll need to make some adjustments. This is what I did.

Great pic Mike. I don't have a screen on my system and no jumpers yet (crossing fingers, toes, and ear lobes). I am debating on linear with the 1" or wide with the 1 1/2".
