I opened the pic, look interesting.
Are we going back to the 80's with high tech undergravel/sand filters? So Mike, how often are you thinking this water and gunk needs to be taken out, weekly, monthly, 1/4ly?
It looks like by the end of this thread I may be ripping my 360 apart?!?!

Dumb Question.....
Why are we trying to hook up a pump to this crap catcher, when we can let gravity do all the work for us?
If we drill out individual bottom drains for each trough, you can hook up a ball valve to each drain and let gravity do its thing. Its kind of a PITA to have 4 holes drilled in the bottom of the tank....
And this is just in the planning stages, so I doubt people will run right out and get multiple holes drilled in the bottom of the tank....
But this would allow an easy, (non powered) way of draining/cleaning a single section each month or so.....
Just a thought.

Ok some counter points.
Mike/Ceasar if we go with just one suction point do you think it would be enought to pull detritus and so on from such a great distance with enough power to pull it through the bed???
Ceasar doing it in 4 inch segements seems to small. For a 4 foot tank you would need 12, man I would need like 40???? I would like to look at compartments but I think they need to be larger.

On the removal if it were in my system I would start with a one month drain out and check the stuff out, do some impact studies (like bacterial re denitrifing) but IMHO it would end up being quarterly. the whole concept at least for me is to kill the build up that occurs over time and to keep that top layer anaerobic, so i think that would be cool.
Nick you bring up a valid point, maybe the drain and smaller compartments thing mind work hand in hand. the only turn off for me would be the under the tank thing. plus we ould have to look at the balancing of the draw to...some thing to think about for sure.

Ok here is my question... what if we do this remotely... like a sump but this time a tank with full of sand with mod plenum system...
In this way... we can add a pre-chamber without any sand in order to catch those heavy detritus. This way, it will not clog our system....
Its like a denitrator but made of mod plenum on sand...

OK let take a left turn on this puppy for a second. What if we made the plenum one peice. Lets make the Vee thing still, but instead of making it stick frame lets enclose the whole thing.

We make the whole unit as one (still can be in smaller modules) instead of attaching pipes and so on we enclose the system and make like a one inch chamber that spans the unit. the top sheet of acrylic would be perferated so it would suck from all surfaces. then have three fittings glued into the ends for plumbling fittings. ?? picture the below drawing as one unit, and then the eggrate placed on top.

Ceasar I would like to keep it in the tank. Alot of folks like the look of a sand substraight and go the dsb route for that reason alone sometimes. ALso having it in the main is the most effective way of geeting at the waste/organics/detritus. Lets perfect what we have. if folks want to move it remote thats fine .

ok,,,another thought, would the smaller particles slogh to the bottom of the V thus giving less flow to the center and more to the sides? how about corragating the top level to hold the substraight in place giving a more even flow?

This is some sweet stuff, When I get back, I'm gonna have to build it, maybe try a 20g set-up and just see if it actually works, I think it would be worth the expense. I've bee itchin for just such a project.
