I recently had a alk swing from 7-10., 3.5 - 5.
Just a moment ago i had a 10 gal jug full of already aerated salt water. I had just did a 8 gal water change. As the alk has risen the calcium has dropped. I then dosed turbo calcium by tropic marin - 1 scoop per 10 gals. I just put in 3 scooops, wanting to see how much it would raise the calcium from 400. All the other paramters check in fine.

What other way would you take inorder to fix the problem because the alk has risen too high???? Are these the correct procedures?
thank you guys
I'm kind of unexperienced a bit working my way through. thank you.
Aaron.

You should be fine, 10 is ok. If you balance the ca and alk in your waterchange water youll be fine. For example mine uses 20cups IO and 4 spoons of ca chloride. As long as the tank is in balance it will remain in balance after the water change.

but... 2 of the acoporas have started to bleach one from the bottom and one from the tips. Will the continue to bleach after the water change i have done or do you think i should do a lugols dip for them? thank you donw
Aaron.

In this INSTANCE, in my case what i have done was just make the salt concentration the same as whats in my aquarium. I did not use ANY type of buffer with the RO DI Water all i did was mix in the salt and make it =. And then removed the aquarium water and replaced it with the water with just the salt mix. Is that correct? thank you.

You need the temp and sg to be equal to the tank. Changing either will give you problems.
What size tank?

the acro that was bleaching from the bottom is just continuing to bleach am i going to have to frag everything from this? there's like 40+ tips on this...
Aaron. thank you don.
Its 125.
thank you.

aaron - how are the corals doing? Its been a few days...has the bleaching continued? Were they bleaching or RTNing?

hello nah20 thank you for asking i feel all warm inside :), well my milli's 2 of them have stn from the base... one of the acros is bleaching from the tips.... ireally dont think it was a reason that i caused because i use to use kent sea mix and just switcehd over to tropic marin. Kent has a alk of some thing like 7 or so and tropic marin has an alk of 9. What do you think? At this point i've stopped really worrying about the milli's and the one acro :( I've just went through a power shortage and i've been worrying about the fish alot more. Thank you leave some info please =] thank you very much.
Aaron.

I would check the Salt that you are Using... Been hearly lots of reports lately about a bad batch of IO.. Causing a few problems in Tanks with Extremely high alk.. If your using IO that could be the issue..

Causing a few problems in Tanks with Extremely high alk..

Good catch James: If this was the case would you also see a Higher PH ??

It would seem logical... however I dont know.. I have only heard from people who have had issues with the alk being EXTREME in recent batches of IO..

Keep an eye on the corals after the power outage, as well. You could have experienced a parameter swing during that time that may stress the corals, too.

i dont know how to stop it.... from stn... :( i've tried dosing about 2 drops per day of lugols to maybe kill the bacteria with the iodine. any suggestions :(? thank you.
Aaron.

Instead of dosing Lugols, frag the coral above the area of STNing. Remount it and run a bead of superglue around the base. It may help in stopping the STN. Other than this current alk swing, have your parameters been pretty stable? Are you dosing anything else besides lugols?

parameters lately have been pretty stable yes. It has just been the alk swing. I've been dosing the usual, calcium, and magnesium and alk buffer (super DKH buffer) from kent marine and the lugols. I need to restock on crazy glue i dont have anymore atm :( thank you very much for your input nikki you have been so helpful. thank you. If there is naything else you can mention about it please inform me =]
thank you again
Aaron.
