fishyfishy I totally disagree. You are not comparing apples to apples

Sure there are less MI, flowerpots, and elegances available now then there were 5 years ago

BUT

all of those things add beauty to a tank and are far more expensive then a cleaner wrasse that provides a function in the ecosystem.

I mean as a consumer if given the choice of buying a $50 coral that looks nice but will probably die when I can buy a different $50 coral that also looks nice and are easily kept which would the intelligent consumer choose? This is assuming they are given proper info from their LFS.

But if a consumer has an ick problem in their tank why would they not buy a $20 fish that could help their other fish even if it was going to die after the job was done?

And again to my first point, if the LFSs would stock neon gobys, red headed gobys, and yellow coris wrasses (yes they clean sometimes) there would be no need for cleaner wrasses.

And ORA usually has neon gobys for a litttle more then the cost of a cleaner goby.

I mean why are wild caught clownfish still available when there are captibe bred clowns readily available

And last but not least look at Fosters and Smith (I hate them guys)

They talk about being concerned about the reefs and all this and that yet they offer 5 species of clowns both captive bred and wild caught....

Talk about a contradiction, sell one or the other. Or sell both and don't claim to be all involved of the safekeeping of the reefs.

I have read through this entire thread and the discussion appears to be WAY off topic of what was originally asked. Let's try to keep it on track and keep the "ethical debates" (which will go on forever) out of it ... as well as the personal attacks.

anyone no the secret to keeping them?????????

I managed for the longest I think was about 20-24 months or so and it eat foods when feeding time The other big thing is maintaining a QT
i have one but it has copper in it. the level is about 1.5ppm and my experience has taught me that wrasse's have a hard time dealing with copper in the water.. any time i purchased a WRASSE and a wrasse only, i just put them in the big tank, because any time i TRYED to put a wrasse in a copper tank he usually died down the road or WHEN in copper....

if a cleaner wrasse cant handle a tank with good levels it for sure ain't surviving one with copper IN MY experience with wrasse's...

Like if your a person who's nitrates appear and vanishes and then some ammonia levels, this of course will be a problem for any long term keeping of a cleaner wrasse.

levels are all in order and have been since i started to just use LR to keep the levels in order... the sump is full of LR and i been using the sump like that for years..

But long term for many with this fish will be hard to say, I think for first you need the best in water quality. Then it needs to be the only cleaner for by having three cleaner wrasses in your tank, they will starve in time, for having one is an extremely good eater that will accept most foods.

one at a time gotha ya

Also it was to my understanding that there is no differences other then species wise of the wrasse and cleaner shrimp, or is it to your understandings VHO Guy? I`m just asking to better what I know if that is the case

As well, it is the LUCK OF THE DRAW for most>

thanks..............................

bro i think got rolled..

ur telling me that the top one is the fake one that attacks fish gills..

when all the the fish saw blue stripe is coming throught it's the RED CROSS(parastie cleaner),,this one will fool all the fish will open up their gill for cleaning,,aha haa,,,yummy ,,gill tissue is the false wreasse's food,,they just keep on picking on it till gill damaged and fish will die.,,

I have had a Cleaner wrasse for over a year now. The first one I got died within months. It was the same as the one that we are calling a false wrasse. My current one has a Yellow belly and some on the head. It is very healthy and fat too. Some have identified mine as a Hawaii Cleaner Wrasse
