I have a little 24 gallon nanocube with the lid. I was wondering if anyone runs one of these without a heater? I am scared mine might get stuck and overheat the damn thing or maybe burst for no good reason and kill everything.

I tried running it without a heater but the temperature fluctuated too much between lights off and lights on. So I added a heater to help reduce the temperature fluctuations but I was wondering if this was necessary. Its a fowlr type tank.

When the lights are on during the day, open the feeding flap. When you turn off the lights at night, close the feeding flap.

Another option is to run a shorter photoperiod or put it on timers for 2 shorter photoperiods in 24 hours

already thought of the lid open but my particular fish will jump out with open lid

i already have the light photoperiod reduced to just 6 hours a day and even though I have no corals i have a large amount of macroalges (its a maco planted tank) that reducing the light further would be detrimental to the algaes.

good ideas though I just can't follow through with them.

I run my 24 gal with out a heater, lights on (MH 150 watt) temp is 78 lights off temp is 74-75. Can you use egg crate to cover the open flap?

How much fluctuation are you getting? Fish can take a gradual drop of several degrees. I ran my 29g biocube without a heater for several months. During the day it would be around 80 and first thing in the morning when I'd kick on the lights it would be around 75. The ocean doesn't stay a constant 80.

I run a 75g FOWLR with no heaters, lights on for 10 hours and off for 12, I don't get any temperature fluctuations

BBurrows, the problem is its a tightly enclosed tank with two cf lamps right at the surface. there is no place for the heat to escape.

the temp fluctuates from 76-84. 84 is getting too high for my comfort zone.

So why are you asking whether you need a heater when it sounds like you need a fan? Get yourself some egg crate or some window screen and pop open the small opening. Then throw a fan over the thing.
