I am not sure about transportation to Blue Sierra unless you drive it which is actually not a bad drive at all. I am from Japan and had no problem driving there and finding it! I hit that place everytime I am in town for a look. But it is usually worth the drive, especially after a new shipment. Not sure about Below Sea Level. For Under the Sea, if thats what you might have ment, 360-336-8133 is the new number...

I think Below Sea Level is closed on Weds. As for Salt Water City, they use to be the premier reef store in the region but slipped considerably the past couple years. It is good to hear they are back to their old high quality cause they sure knew what they were doing before.

Well I made it to Below Sea Level. Nice little shop. Definitely a place I would visit regularly if I was a local. I was planning on visiting Coral Beauty as well but fate stepped in and I wasn't able to go. Oh well, next time. I planning on visiting Portland before Thanksgiving do I make sure hit the one in Salem and the one in Eugene. Thanks for all of the suggestions.

Saltwater City screwed me by both the first and second owners so I have stayed away for a few years; just for kicks I stopped in there last spring/summer to buy some flake food and they didn't have any!

Where is saltwater city? Whats the address? I couldnt find it in the whitepages for seattle...

I like blue sierra, thats where I got my vho lighting, 440watts of power baby! But I heard that alot of their fish has ick, my science teacher last year did not have a good year, all his fish he got from blue sierra had ick. I still love the place. Got a quick question about them, do they sell ro/di for cheap? I got a very bad algae breakout, I scrape the glass one day, and in about 4-5 days it starts growing back! I have lowered my lighting hrs by a bit, which has slowed down the algae, I can start seeing the back of the aquarium, But keeps coming back in small slow growing amounts. Its really stressful. Will I have to get a calcium reactor for a clam? Im thinking about getting one in a few months.

Hi SaltwaterTeen,

While this may be best for a different thread rather than this one, you generally would not need a full reactor for a clam, you can use supplements if truly needed (doubtful if the clam would be your only calcium gorging animal/coral). However clams do generally require a mature tank with sufficient lighting, so some might say that you should wait for a while.

Perhaps though your question would be good to ask for advice from another forum i.e. general discussion, SPS/Clams, etc.

To the thread, I have only been to Blue Sierra once while driving through Seattle and was really impressed by it. Now that we have moved the tank to Redmond, I look forward to having more stores to look and shop at!

Hi again!

So I was in Seattle this past week for 2 quick days and made a stop at both Saltwater city and Blue Sierra. While both very different, I must say that I was incredibly pleased by both places!

I purchased a quick clean-up crew at Salt Water City, and was impressed by the time that the staff took with me. Stock looked very nice, and while I'm new to US pricing, everything seemed reasonable.

I then toodled over to Sierra, where I met the manager and a few others who also were incredibly friendly and knowledgeable. I was hoping to purchase a new impellor for a Prism Pro (Let's not get into it), but noboldy had any. I did however pick up a new ice cap fan to replace one that was having problems. I really liked the set-up and stock that they had.

In Vancouver we only have a few decent shops, and sadly none of them are known for their hospitality (overall not bad but not what I found at both of the Seattle shops). I have been spoiled though, one of our local Vancouver LFS's sells IO Salt for $40 Cdn for a large bucket, translates into roughly $32 USD, whereas both Seattle shops were considerably more. Still, I believe in local shops, especially friendly and knowledgeable ones. I expect to have a great time at both places!

Best,

Rob

I can totally relate. I took my wife on a date to Portland with no kids. What I got out of it was my annual shopping trip to Soutas. $500 later, my frags, maxima, and ourselves were travelling down the interstate back to Washington. I cashed out a bunch of vacation, 1/3 went to bills, 1/3 went to Romance, and 1/3 went to the tank. : ) It sounds like I had better earn some more vacation. Thanks for the link. Maybe I should start drinking real heavy, then tell my wife I need to go to AA. (Advanced Aquariums)

LOL!

If you can drive in Japan everywhere else would be a breeze!

;)

Come on now, Japanese drivers are...well "responsibly stupid" drivers(LOL). They do some crazy stuff but at least they let you know they are going to do it and appoligize for cutting you off when they do...
