So I had a break out of ich in my DT so have had everyone in a hospital tank. Did a furan II treatment for an abrasion that my trigger got and cupramine afterwards for the ich. On Sunday, started every other day 25% water change and started carbon. I noticed yesterday my tang had what I thought was abrasions but now look like growths. Not sure how to treat.

Any help is appreciated.

Just to be sure I understand. . .Your display tank had a Marine Ich outbreak. The fish were moved to a QT. They were all treated with Furan-2. Then they were given a treatment with Cupramine. Is any part of this wrong?

How long did the Furan-2 treatment last?

How long was the Cupramine treatment? What was the copper content during treatment?

Furan 2 is a rather aggressive mix of ingredients and would likely have stripped the fishes of their norma flora (the kind that should be there) bacteria. The copper would have prevented normal recovery from the Furan 2 effects. This could end up with fishes that exposed to a wide variety of what are called 'opportunistic' pathogens -- things that attack life forms that are weakened or reduced in ability to fend them off. The most common of these are the 'fake' fungal pathogens. They are 'fake' in the sense that they give the appearance of being fungal, but they aren't. REAL fungal infections are almost impossible to treat in ornamental marine fishes.

I would not proceed on the above assumption. I'm not certain yet of the diagnosis. The photos are just not clear enough for me to make a more certain evaluation. Either I need better photos or an excellent description of what the growths look like. Do they appear to like cotton? Do you see filaments? Are they identically pointed-sticking out or in a mix-mash arrangement? How thick are they? (like hairs, or thick like worms)? I'm concerned about what you call 'abbrasion' since this has been applied to different conditions on your fish. Describe what you think is an 'abrasion.' Generally, Furan 2 is given to fishes with a difficult topical infection rather than what most would call an abrasion. Is this area cleared up now on the Trigger?

I'd like to have the current test kit (not dip stick or badge) readings on:
ammonia
nitrite
nitrate

What fishes are being kept together right now? in what size aquarium?

The full treatment story is :

2 Weeks Hypo following your guidelines.
Blue throat trigger scraped up his chin from panicing during the move diving toward the corner of the aquarium
Blue throat trigger scraped started getting inflamed (reddish / whitish)
Started Furan II treatment. Removed Carbon, Dosed each day for 4 days doing 25% WC on the second and 5 th day
Blue throat trigger responded to treatment all is good.
Around 3rd week Purple Tang starts developing spots again, reconfirm that hypo still at right level
Start raising Salinity. Began treatment for Marine Velvet with Cupramine. Followed your directions 48hrs to get treatment level of .04 - .06. Verfied with both Salifert and Seachem test kits.
Purple tang lasted for 3 days after treatment but didn't make it.
Cupramine treatment complete after 14 days everyone looks healthy.
Started 20% WC every 48 hours and running carbon
Cupramine + 4 days notice growths on tang

Hospital tank is a 60 gallon bare bottom with PVC pipe. All fish are in it.

Stocking list of Hospital tank
1) Blonde Naso Tang
2) Yellow Eye Tang
3) 2 clown fish
4) algage bleenie
5) blue throat trigger
6) yashi goby
7) Sadle back puffer

Everyone appears to be eating. Only sign of sickness is the Naso tang.

Params:
Amonia : 0
NO2: 1ppm
NO3: 40ppm

Here is a video of the tang might be clearer

Thanks for the detailed information. It is helplful.

Start by reviewing the fish's diet. The Tang should be eating mostly macro algae and fed like this: How to Feed Macro Algae to Marine Fishes. Be sure both vitamin and fat supplements are added to its food. Lastly, add immune boosters to its food: Immune Boosters.

I believe when http://www.reeffrontiers.com/forums/f15/fed-properly-proper-nutrition-57474/ the fish will fight off this invasion. I believe what it has is an opportunistic infection, most likely something fungal-like. The fish can cure itself, but not without pristine water quality and the proper diet. Feed this fish no land products or prepared foods that contain them. Feed this fish no foods it wouldn't find in the waters it came from.

Regarding the water quality. Not good seeing Nitrites. There may be other 'hidden' problems. Perform a very large - huge - water change. If you can't do over 80% water change, don't bother. You'll need to be careful and follow these guidelines for that large of a water change: How to Make a Successful Water Change. Controlling pH is very important for this change. The fish should not 'see' any change in pH or temperature specially.

Thanks Lee. After looking at the numbers I did do a 40% WC. I had just been testing ammonia and not worrying about NO2 or NO3. I'll do a larger WC tomorrow after I give the salt 24hrs to mix. I can do up to 45 gallon WC at once which is just shy of 80%. I have been feeding sea weed on a vegi clip I'll try soaking it ahead of time in Vit C and Beta Glucan. You mentioned fat supplements but in your post it wasn't clear which one you recomended?

The example of supplements is listed here: Fish Health Through Proper Nutrition. In the list are:
Selco (fats)
Selcon (fats)
Zoecon (fats)

There are others. Use one made from sealife and that is readily available to you (and reasonably fresh -- a place that sells it often enough to not have an old stock).

I would also suggest changing brands/sources of the algae you're feeding AND vary the color. Even if the Tang won't eat the 'other' colors, keep offering them and sometimes sneak a little bit in with the one the Tang favors.

Thanks I'll pick up some today. I've been rotating green/brown/red randomly. He dosen't really care for the brown.
