Its that time again. "The changing of the guard" so to speak.
As we wrap up another year and get ready for our annual bar-b-que we need to nominate and elect a new BOD to keep things moving along.

This thread will only be for nominations and resignations.

With that said, Ive been on the BOD for 2 1/2 years and no longer have a reef tank. I'm resigning from any formal position in the club but will stay on as a helper if the new BOD chooses to keep me on.

After much consideration Steven11 and myself have decided we would be interested in leading the PSAS in a new direction. Getting back to the grass roots of club membership. The Bob Moore frag swap would be a tradition that would continue. We have considered such things as shutting down the PSAS website as reeffrontiers in combination with email e-vites is probably enough for members to communicate between monthly meetings. Also save some $. Our goal is to get a back yard BBQ feeling to our the meetings. More importantly to get the kind of attendance every month rather than only the Bob Moore swap.

When the boy's get together, they drink beer, eat chips with hot sauce and B.S. about reef tanks all night.

Our goal would be to simplify things so that feelings do not get hurt, membership fee's could possibly be lowered, and maintain a close relationship with our local fish stores and vendors. Also, rather than having a "tank tour", hold meetings at folks homes. Steven and I have both agreed to hold events at our homes and we would like others to offer also. You get to show off your tank, and make some buddies. The nice thing about a ever changing location is reefers on the northend might not make it to a south end meet, but the following month its in their very own town.

THE MAIN GOAL: Meetings that people want to attend so they can chill and hang, and talk about reef stuff. Not to fill up on club purchased corals.

We even thought about something like a 40g cooler with 80 degree water in it and a heater at every meeting. Every meetings a frag swap that way. You work out something with another guy on the boards and the item can float safely during the meeting if you'd forgotten a cooler or something.....

Any thoughts?

A few,
The PSAS site doesnt cost any money monthly and is basically paid for for the next five years.
It was started so the BOD can have discussions without being monitored by RF moderators.
The PSAS web site is also home to several forums such as the members only forum in which we can have member votes (such as the upcoming BOD election) without any RF member from across the world from having a vote. Its also home to the DBTC program which could possibly become part of the national DBTC program if it ever builds momentum.

Grass roots is great, alot of members would love to have meetings at other peoples homes. Most just dont want to have them at thier homes. The thought of up to 40 people hanging out can be scary. If the future BOD can find a way to get meeting back into people homes it would be a very welcome thing.
I've suggested having split north/south meetings with same topic agendas to make this more feasible in smaller more welcome groups. For example, Additives as a topic. I have 40 pounds of BRS part A and plenty of part B I'd donate to make a hands on two part demo for all to go home with some it they wanted

Im actually a little confused with the mention of lower pricing since it was Stevens idea two years ago to raise the price.

The main goal is a great one.........

End result, Im glad your both considering taking on any role in the club. Its not a high paying job.

After 2 years I also will not be returning next year to a formal position on the Board of Directors. I feel the club should always stay fresh with new people at the reins to bring new ideas.

It has been fun being part of the dynamics of running this club, though at times it has been a bit crazy

I would encourage all members to consider taking their turn at a position on the BOD. This club cannot continue without members who are willing to step up and do the organizational stuff.

Since you asked for thoughts:

Cons:

1) As a member who spouse is a recovering alcoholic we would not be comfortable at meetings where the drinking was a big part of the entertainment. Not to mention the liability to the club, if it serves alcohol (and the BOD is the one that would get sued) if someone were to drive home drunk and get in an accident

2) I would be bored if it was just hanging out at someone's house. I would recommend some type of theme, workshop etc.

3) Chips are not on my diet, will there be a veggie tray:p.

Pros:

1)Moving the meeting around is a great idea that appeals to many members, the logistics are tough though . . .

2) I will still buy a membership even if it is just to get the discount

As a reminder,

From the PSAS Charter: Only Members in good standing who have attended at least 2 (two) meetings in the current membership year are eligible for nomination for office for the following membership year.

The complete club charter can be found at http://thepsas.org/forum/psas_charter.php

I don't want anybody to miss out on their opportunity so wanted to add this reminder so those considering positions still have the time to attend a second meeting if needed.

Formal BOD Positions:

President
Vice President
Treasurer
Secretary
Membership Chair

Well, I understand your concern but you may be in the minority. I'm sure there are some recovering addicts that still go to restaurants that have a bar. If I'm talking reef, I'm cracking a beer.

I know I don't need to attend a meeting on how to frag a coral. That could me a monthly write up on the PSAS forum.

While I do value your input we feel that taking the club in a new far less structured direction is what will save the PSAS.

As for liabilites I'm sure there are ways around it depending on how the club is structured. People need to be responsible for themselves.

Like I said before. Steven and I are offering to do it. We are open to suggestions but we have a general idea of what we want the club to become.

So that's our campain I guess. Will this be a vote?

is what will save the PSAS.

Just so your assumption does not lead to others misunderstanding, the club is just fine, with a steady membership and a strongly growing sponsorship base. It in no means needs to be "saved".

Fresh ideas are great and I am sure yours hold merit with many. If you are nominating yourself and meet the qualifications then the members will vote in June and choose who they want to run the club. Is there a particular position you are interested in?

Clarification

"I’m actually a little confused with the mention of lower pricing since it was Stevens idea two years ago to raise the price."
- Duane, this sure came out of context. This was to get rid of the idea of the family membership and in turn only have a membership and allow any members to bring guests.

"1) As a member who spouse is a recovering alcoholic we would not be comfortable at meetings where the drinking was a big part of the entertainment. Not to mention the liability to the club, if it serves alcohol (and the BOD is the one that would get sued) if someone were to drive home drunk and get in an accident"
-The big part of the entertainment is the reef tanks. I do understand the sensitivity but there would be plenty of options for everyone. As far as liability, there is zero. It is a personal responsiblity to not drink too much. And as a member of the BOD, I will not have a problem confronting some one in private if it became a problem. If someone can explain differently, I am welcome to it.

"Just so your assumption does not lead to others misunderstanding, the club is just fine, with a steady membership and a strongly growing sponsorship base. It in no means needs to be "saved"."
-Your points are valid. Though I do remember a thread started by a member of the BOD wondering why no one is showing up to the meetings. The core of the club was the aspect of getting together and enjoying the company while discussing a common interest of reef tanks. It has now become a discount that more than pays for itself in a years time plus the new benefit of free frags and the BM event. How many members show up to at least 50% of the meetings? So I guess the health of the club is all relative to ones opinion.

I have expressed my opinion on this subject numerous times. The meetings are best in a friendly home environment where old pals can chat and meet new friends. The grange is an AWESOME place for occational large events. Monthly meetings are too frequent for me. If only quarterly, I would attend most if not all. Monthly, makes it too common place and overworks the board. Beer is an accepted part of lifestyle in Ameica for responsible adults. There is no true exposure to liability for the club to have alcohol present. The club is judgement proof.

The June BBQ will be in my home and we will be serving beer. I plan on attending if at all possible:rolleyes:

The thing is, my buddies like guns, video games, hookers and muscle cars.

When I try to talk to them about reef stuff they walk out of the room.

I love getting together with fellow reefers to talk about my experiences and hear about things that you have done with your tank.

Steven and I will both fulfill our eligibility requirements at May's meeting.

I nominate myself and Steven for Prez, and Vice Prez.

Mike, would you consider being part of the BOD as we seem to all share the same vision?

Im sorry, I don't mean to put you on the spot sir. I should have said, I appreciate your comments and am glad we agree. :D

I would be honored to serve especially with such an amazing group of kind dedicated souls. Alas, my schedule is much too unpredictable as to be reliable. I prefer to contribute support and advice behind the scenes.

my turn now!!!!!!
Do you all know that we have made more money this year then psas has before.
there was one thread up around Christmas time because I was upset that not more people showed up. one thread that's it. and that didn't last long.
If there were more members who would let us use their houses we would of.
We didn't have all the meeting at the hall.
the meetings we did have there. alot of people showed up.
our event coordinator quite after two months. so i filled in for him.
I want the club to stay the way it is!!!!!!!!
or ever get bigger

So I nominate Tom Workaholic for Prez, and johnpeezy Vice Prez.

-My problem with the clubs direction. Not that i am against it growing, but the psas is not a business. The focus shouldnt be income, it should be participation.
