Hey guys - I was checking out the website today and saw you guys have a pretty neat product I hadn't seen before. Finally a decent size bottle of fragger glue (honey). Yipee! I've been looking for one of these for a while. It's 2 oz ehh? that's twice the size of like a basic Icygel right?

I thought the plastic bottle looked pretty neat too b/c I always find myself tearing little holes in the metal tubes trying to squeeze every last drop out.

Have you had a chance to try it out? if yes, what's your preference between this one and say your basic Icygel or Loctite or the other white metal tubed brand you sell?

pros? cons? thoughts?

Just curious

thx

Ben

Hey Ben I picked some of this stuff up today from BR and it works great. Tim did a little demo on how it works and it holds very well. You have to work the glue a little on the rock you want to attach it on for 5-10 seconds and then it bonds like no other. :D I tried it out on a few frags today and was very pleased with the results. I was told by Tim to keep it in the fridge so it keeps it's honey like texture.

Hmm..I think it should work like all others.

What I like to do...is to put a bead on on the crevice, rubble, etc you want to glue your frag on. Take out some water from the tank in a small container. Dip the rock all the way in, including the part you just put glue on. It will make a nice little 'skin'. Place the frag on, place in the water again....before putting it into the tank.

Best,
Ilham

the one thing I was worried about is not being able to get all of it out of the container b/c of the shape. I'm sure the contents are the same as all others. If the container is malable enough though I bet you could squeeze it pretty good. Jayson - is this a pretty soft plastic container?

Elmo - I do a similar version to what you just described. I usually don't take the time and effort to take it out of the main tank into a seperate container, but I think it's a good idea to do it that way (put it in a seperate container). I've had some glue remanants float back into the tank before which is no good. I think the way you just described is the best way to do it too.

Glue, Glue, Glue

Hey folks!
Here is the Tim-lowdown on the science of superglue. To start off answering some of the questions, the "honey" glue that comes in a plastic bottle is a little more runny than honey at room temperature and does not stick to the insides of the bottle so it is very easy to use up all the contents in each bottle and the bottle has a medium soft plastic so you don't break your hand squeezing the glue out. IMO the honey has better holding power, because of its runnier viscosity, it can penetrate the grooves and poors of the rock and frags better. The flip side is that it is less user friendly b/c of its runnier viscosity therefore I always recommend that it be kept in the refrigerator prior to each use to thicken it up. This will prevent the "skinning" effect that happens when you first place the frag in the water and then that glue layer spreads across the top of the water and then gets either all over your fingers or worse your frag and then your cursing to the heavens "God I Hate Barriers Fragger Glue!!". The gel that comes in the tube is virtually identical to IC-Gel to all those who are familiar with that glue and is definately more user friendly, but you sacrifice a little holding power and get less glue per dollar. If anyone wants my methods of how I glue frags most efficiently I will continue part 2 of this book in another post. The bottles go for $9.99 and the gel tubes are $7.99. Hope this helps.

Cy here...remember...barrierreeftc is Tim. He's the one preaching about the glue. My experiences are the same as Tim's and I will let him share his methods since he is a little better at it than I am.

Ben,

Yes its twice the size of IC-Gel and since its like honey you can get almost all of it out of the bottle. The 1oz gel glue we sell is almost identical, if not the same, as IC-Gel. I prefer working with the Honey, but every now and then I end up picking it off my fingers. Operator error!

so would it work okay to apply underwater? Most of my rock is not easily removeable from the tank and so I often end up gluing in the tank. Would that work okay?

Yes it will. I often put a layer on the bottom of the frag and dip it in water to skin it so it won't run. Then I put another layer on, skin it, and then glue it to LR in our tanks. The trick is to rub the coral/glue against the surface you want to adhere it to. Once it starts getting tacky, twist it a few times and hold it in place for 10-20 seconds. You should be good.

sounds easy :).

Hope my FYI for tim and my username didn't sound snotty Gaby. I was just pointing it out as people mix us up every now and then:)

thanks for the info guys.. look forward to giving this product a try.

Also wanted to thank you for getting some of the coolest all around products in period. This is just one example. Thank you. It's refreshing to say the least. :)

Not a good thing to be sure.... I had a hepatus eat a blob of glue and wondered it would end up "glued shut". He/she made it through just fine, but I sure learned!

We've had fish go "taste" freshly glued frags and glue their mouths shut too. Picking super glue off of reef fishes mouths is pretty easy "surgery" once you catch the fish:) Its best to keep fish away from the glued area until the glue is hardened.

I bought their glue that comes in the plain white tube...ultimately it worked out for me just fine...good enough to get me to buy another tube next time I am at BRA.

As far as technique...my rock is not easily removed as well so I just dab some glue onto the bottom of the frag after removing it from the plug (making sure to cover all of the exposed skeleton), then I hit the rock with the frag making sure that I either press the frag against the rock in an up and down motion or swirl it on the rock until I can see that the glue is sticking to the rock (it makes more sense when you are actually seeing/doing it) and finally when I am sure the glue is on the rock and the frag I hold it for a count of ten or twenty which seems to help set the frag to the rock for long term placement. Then I wait for the frag to encrust onto the rock.

I'm glad they carry these larger-sized glue tubes/bottles...I hated using that locktite bottle with the squeezee sides...always made my thumbs hurt and I always ran out before I was done gluing!
