Lee,
My copperband has developed a white/opaque cyst or legion on his side yesterday and is starting to develop another one on his other side tonight.
My anthia had the same thing a few months ago where it looked almost like a white worm sticking out of his side. It died within 3 days since I could not get it out of the display to treat it.
No other fish exhibit symptoms. The copperband does not have a change in behavior, is eating well, and is not flashing or anything. The only thing I see is a darkening of the rear fin area and the white/opaque thing on his side.
I have several ideas of what it may be. First thought was a myxosporidian infection because the copperband not only has the small cyst on his side but also the darkened pigimentation around the tail. But he does not spin or swim in circual irregular patterns as of yet.
Another thought was Benedenia aince that is a small opaque to white parasite normally 3-12mm in length and 1/4 in width which this thing looks like. This may be what the anthia had since it developed a secondary infection around the white parasite and died very shortly afterward. My book, The Marine Fish Health and Feeding Handbook by Goemans and Ichinotsubo, says a freshwater dip (or several dips) is the best course of action. The also recommend either formalin or malachite green added to the bath. They also say praziquantel might be effective against monogeans administered at a rate of 3.125mg/L (available in brand form as Prazipro).
I attached some pictures that best show the problem area. Lee I would really appreciate it if you would be so kind as to help me out with what it can be and what I can do. Thanks.
