Lee,

My copperband has developed a white/opaque cyst or legion on his side yesterday and is starting to develop another one on his other side tonight.

My anthia had the same thing a few months ago where it looked almost like a white worm sticking out of his side. It died within 3 days since I could not get it out of the display to treat it.

No other fish exhibit symptoms. The copperband does not have a change in behavior, is eating well, and is not flashing or anything. The only thing I see is a darkening of the rear fin area and the white/opaque thing on his side.

I have several ideas of what it may be. First thought was a myxosporidian infection because the copperband not only has the small cyst on his side but also the darkened pigimentation around the tail. But he does not spin or swim in circual irregular patterns as of yet.

Another thought was Benedenia aince that is a small opaque to white parasite normally 3-12mm in length and 1/4 in width which this thing looks like. This may be what the anthia had since it developed a secondary infection around the white parasite and died very shortly afterward. My book, The Marine Fish Health and Feeding Handbook by Goemans and Ichinotsubo, says a freshwater dip (or several dips) is the best course of action. The also recommend either formalin or malachite green added to the bath. They also say praziquantel might be effective against monogeans administered at a rate of 3.125mg/L (available in brand form as Prazipro).

I attached some pictures that best show the problem area. Lee I would really appreciate it if you would be so kind as to help me out with what it can be and what I can do. Thanks.

It seems like the book is recommending three treatments for the same condition? A FW dip, Formalin, and Prazipro.

If it is Benedenia then research in Japan has indicated that the ingesting of Praziquantel has about a 70% effective rate of getting rid of it. However, the drug is administered orally, not by putting the fish in a bath of it.

With regards to the FW dip, again if it is Benedenia the worm is still inside the fish, well protected from the contact with the FW.

Formalin is used in topical conditions and like mentioned above, the worm is still inside (if it is Benedenia).

I would feed the fish a dosage of Praziquantel, with the second dose as I recommend. If no effect is observed, switch to the Jungle food containing all three meds.

When (and if) the worm gets to the surface or breaks the skin of the fish DO NOT USE FORMALIN. At that stage, the FW dip would/could be effective.

We do not use formalin on any fish with an open wound.

do i use methylene blue in the freshwater dip as it looks the worm has broken the skin at his point.

It's optional, but I would. It helps calm the fish vis a vis providing more oxygen. It may also further 'harass' the worm.

a few days of feeding with prazipro soaked food seems to have completely eradicated the problem. have not done the dip yet but unless the symptoms re-appear I dont think I will. thanks for the help Lee.
