Don't get me wrong - I like my two long-spine urchins. but recently my digital thermometer for the tank quit reading temperature. Today I noticed that the thermocouple lead, which had been covered with hair algae, is now bare and showing a white line (which I assume to be the inside insulation, and has obviously been compromised). Admittedly, I didn't see the urchins do it, but they are the only possible suspects.

Yes, I have pulled the thermocouple lead out of the water to avoid the risk of copper poisoning.

this isnt the same thing at all but i have some rust that developed on some hose clamps in my sump is that dangerous?

I've had rust on hose clamps with no problems (exept that the hose clamp eventually fails).

You can always buy plastic hose clamps and avoid it all together : )
