Well, I'd have to say that's just a risk you take when you start a thread about using drain cleaner in your tank...

Anyway, looks like Boomer re-hijacked it :D

Ok. One word of caution dont put tinfoil in your draino bottle and close the lid.:)

Now we're going to have a liability suit against RF because some guy playing around with drano blows something up!

We need to retitle the thread "Hey Kids! Fun you can have with Drano!"....

Anyway, my apologies for my part in the gratuitous hijacking of this thread...;)

Makes a heck of a mess.

Yah, like your face looking like it has just melted

Water - 60-100%
Sodium Hypochlorite - 3-7%
Sodium Hydroxide - 1-5%
Sodium Silicate - 1-5%

What kind of dumb MSDS is that  How can it be 100 % water and still be Drano :?: How could it be 60 % water + 7 + 5 + 5 = 77 %

Yeah I didn't understand that either.

Any ill effects other than those mentioned earlier? Or should I start melting Xenia?

You guys are crazy. Draino for hydroids and xenia. Why dont you just use a thick Kalk paste and smear it over them like butter on toast?

I gave drano a try tonight, can't say I'm a big fan.

The stuff absolutely does melt whatever it hits, even bleached the coraline I got some of it on. What really erked me however, was the fact that it solidified into a jelly like substance that happened to float around the tank and irritated alot of other stuff that it wasn't intended to. It had some strange effects on a few softies as well. Although I didn't see it physically touch any of them, some retracted in a different way. For instance, my zoo's, instead of retracting into a little ball like normal, the actual tendrils shriveled up while the disc stayed open. Really strange looking. Same thing happened to the GSP I have in there as well. The effects only lasted about 15 minutes though, so no permanent damage. Almost all the other polyps on my SPS retracted too. My Starry Blenny was pretty freaked out as well.

In the long run, I personally am not going to be using it again. Guess I'll just wait until I have a drain that slows down to use it again.

More than likley that was a reaction that created some Mg(OH)2. The same thing you see when to much kalk is added or a high pKs buffer is added ( i.e., when you have not had a WC in a long time and add SeaChem Labs Marine Buffer).

And what Drano did you use the liquid ? The liquid has bleach in it and that may have also been a cause.

Hey boomer, I just used the regular Liquid stuff, none of the two part. HERE is the MSDS for it.
