Halmus' 120 Reef Tank

where did you find the yellow fiji leather??

I picked it up in a small shop in Lacey. I don't know if they're even open now. They closed after the big winter storm earlier this year, and weren't open for weeks after. I don't know if they recovered. I don't mean to talk trash, but since they aren't a sponsor, I don't feel as bad. The young guy that runs it is nice, but his fish tanks are dirty and he doesn't have the clientele to justify a decent coral selection. It was just a fluke that I stopped in one day and they had this. It's not really rare, but a specimen this yellow is a little harder to come by. Barrier Reef often has similar corals.

So, at my wife's request, I finally got the garage/shop cleaned earlier today. A rare occurance.

<a href="http://s1048.photobucket.com/albums/s372/halmus/Filtration/?action=view&current=2-1.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1048.photobucket.com/albums/s372/halmus/Filtration/2-1.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

And then......

I saw something on CL. And then....I got really excited.

<a href="http://s1048.photobucket.com/albums/s372/halmus/Filtration/?action=view&current=3.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1048.photobucket.com/albums/s372/halmus/Filtration/3.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

The dimensions are 24" wide, 16" deep, 33" tall. It's made of 3/4" acrylic. 3/4"!!! As is, it's approximately 58gal. That gets me excited. I've been looking around for something to make a frag tank out of. I also wanted a type of "show" tank to sell frags in, say that the annual Bob Moore Frag Swap here in the Puget Sound, or similar events. It's just a cool shallow tank to have on hand. But you're looking at the picture saying SHALLOW? My plan is to lay it on the side like thus..

<a href="http://s1048.photobucket.com/albums/s372/halmus/Filtration/?action=view&current=4.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1048.photobucket.com/albums/s372/halmus/Filtration/4.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

And cut it so the dimensions are 24" wide, 33" long, and 8" deep. It's 3/4" acrylic, so I'm counting on not having to reinforce the tank when done.

<a href="http://s1048.photobucket.com/albums/s372/halmus/Filtration/?action=view&current=1-1.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1048.photobucket.com/albums/s372/halmus/Filtration/1-1.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

I will, however, have to do a little work on the end to seal it up. I may have to decrease the dimensions slightly to get a good piece of the 3/4" to redo the end where the top currently is. Although, I have plans to cut one half shorter than the other in length and use the scraps to patch up the other. Happy Birthday to me! Only it's far past my birthday. I got a smokin' deal on this too. The guy was selling a similar thickness 120gal tank with the dimensions 3' x 2' by 3' deep. Happy Birthday to whoever got that one! It's a good day for a few area reefers.

I also have to figure out how to polish up acrylic and make it look pretty. I've done a lot of work with the material, but I've never cared about aesthetics before. TAP plastics have some amazingly cheesy online videos to watch. I might put their promotional jingle on my IPod.

I forgot to mention why I showed the clean garage. It's time for it to get dirty again. Sorry dear. It was clean for a day....

The guy says the shop will open May 1 (tomorrow). Hopefully it's in better shape. The guy I talked to wasn't young though and definitely said he was the owner.

Nice grab for a frag tank! I want one eventually but there's no reason ATM since I don't even have enough to fill my wife's tank at home. You always see to be on your "next" reef project. :)

I wonder I'd someone else bought the store? The shop I'm thinking of is owned by a young guy with a white hummer. There was another shop that opened for about a week. Then he relocated and opened for another week. Then closed? I'll have to check it outAs far as always having a "next reef project". I wonder if you've been talking to my wife. She said almost the same thing only with a differen tone. Looks like my projects are on hold for a while. :) The garage will remain clean for a while longer. Bummer. I tried to convince he that I'm an "artist" an that she's oppressing my artistic voice. She didn't buy it. :).

This place is called Exotic Aquaria in Lacey that I'm talking about. I think I remember hearing that it did change hands...I'm not 100% sure though.

Yeah...Good luck with that kind of argument. I had a similar conversation with mine. She said...there's really never a stopping point is there? I simply said there's always more that you can do to make your reef better. :)

Very very nice tank. Tag along.
Thank you for stopping by and for the kind words. I have a couple interesting projects in the works I hope to get started on in the next few weeks. I'll make sure to document them as I go once I get the green light to make the garage dirty by the boss. Update there is that the boss needs her triathlon racing bike fixed by yours truly. So she's going to owe me. :)

So, I mentioned I had a few projects in the works. One of them I've been documenting here:

http://www.reeffrontiers.com/forums/f8/psas-reef-62777/

It's the PSAS club's tank build. The details are there, and I'll continue to update as I go. For now, a quick preview, this is the cabinet where the frag tank will be in my garage.

Here's a quick survey for those of you following along: What kind of silicone do you use for your in tank projects?

I've used GE Silicone II (100%) silicone in the past. I had heard it was safe. (I've been asking this on PSAS as well). I got some feedback from hobbyists that E6000 is good. Is there anything any of you use that's available at the local hardware store, or do you all use the crazy priced stuff that comes in a toothpaste tube at the local fish shop?

Sweeeet tank halmus. The gadgetry is stunning and leaves me dizzy. But your tank really shows that it is well cared for and looks amazing. I saw your twin spot hogfish. I just got one and love its personality. It practically glows under the lighting. Sweet RBTA on the right side.

Thanks! The hogfish is definitely a character. He lives up to his name. Greedy little guy. I haven't had a RBTA in the tank for a year and half now, so I think probably what you must be seeing is the red birds-nest colony I got a few weeks ago. It's on the far right side of the tank fairly close to the bottom. It's already a good sized colony, but I can't wait for it to really grow into place. If I had to list my favorite corals in the tank, it would be a close second. First place still goes to the growing colonies of teal echinata acros. I keep fragging the mother colony and spreading out the base. I also fragged some corals the other day and they're cooking in my little frag tank area now.

Lol I guess I'm hallucinating anemones! Ain't that crazy. I like birdnests. But I haven't reached the level of Sps yet.

I thought I would do a little update. We went out to Coral Props this weekend for the monthly PSAS meeting. The owner is an awesome guy, and is running a pretty innovative setup. He grows all of his corals in a greenhouse with natural sunlight. He's out in Spokane area and does mostly online business with the occasional open house. Anyway, if you're looking for INSANE awesome clams, LPS, or softies look up his site. He's still working on integrating SPS. That's mainly what I'm interested in, so here are a few shots of what I got.

A yellow SPS frag (he wouldn't give up the mother colony), the name I'm not sure of:

And a blue ridge coral (not SPS, but still cool):

They're still in my frag tank for now.
