this is a first for me!...ever have an external pump sieze due to calcium build up? well i have now!! i had my custom aquatic pump stop. so i figured it got something jammed in the impellor, so i open it up and lo and behold,,,there is the shiny skin of greyish calcium shining like polished glass. around the impellor shaft it was more gouged and rough from build up, this is what ultimately caused the siezing. it took some chipping but i got it out and the pump works like new! anyone else ever get this?

All the time Dave. thats way you need to keep a good maintence schedule on them. If you soak the affected parts in vinager it desolves it completely away.

You rock Mike, yes u do.

who has time for soaking,,,lol,,,i prefer a more brutal form of reefing,,:D

i also took apart my 3mdqx and it showed no signs of build up,,guess some pumps are more suseptible than others.

On the some pumps are more susceptable than others note, its my understanding cavitation is what sets the stage for the pump to build up calcium layers, as they build up, more cavitation = more layers. I clean my impellers every 3 months if not sooner. See, the navy's crazy training is good for something. Steve
