HI all,

A recent hot opic in the uk at the moment is all about the hows and whys of not having mushroom or button polyps or star polyps in a tank containing SPS corals. people say that they should be removed post haste before they kill the sps. is this true? what would u recommend?

i have a few in my tank and no harm has come of anything yet.

tony.

they are basically from different enviroments and have different adaptions that are not compatible. I personally believe they should not be considered in a high flow system due to the lack of nutrients in the water column.

I think they can over run a tank and kill stuff, that is easily solved by taking the offending rock and a razor blade and removing the corals you dont want letting them heal and selling them to the lfs. If my gsp and ricordia are killing my acro and monti I dont know about it. LOL

The biggest problem with them occurs over time (a few years) as they climb out from the shade of the stony corals. They sting and kill upon contact all the while climbing higher and higher splitting as they go.

Hydnophora is one of the few species that does a good job of defending its area. If you cut or peel mushroom corals from the rocks be sure to wear eye protection. I once got a small spray of water in my eye as the coral retracted and ended up with my eye buning like hell for about 10 hours and the skin turned red for about 3" around my eye.

Regards,
Kevin

I had a mushroom that as it spread out it would sting the yellow porite next to it. Took the whole rock out cut out the mushroom and covered the hole it was coming from with gel glue. Now the porite is growing over the glue and no sign of the mushroom.

My mushrooms are slowly spreading everywhere....I had 2 and now I have about 40; but I don't care that they are taking over a bit - it's just really nice to know that they like living in my tank so much!!

It is true. Mushrooms kill just about anything they come into contact with. They are toxic for sure!
