Hi Lee,

I apologize for the poor pictures, but I'm hoping you can help me ID this juvenile angel. It was sold to me as a P.chrysurus, but based on my research, its more likely to be either a P.asfur, or a P. maculosus.

Can you help me figure this one out? The angel is a little bit longer than an inch in length from nose to tail.

Nick

Looks a lot like a juv Pomacanthus asfur. What sea did it come from?

Yellow tail and larger central white stripe

I was only told it came from Africa and was labeled as a juvi P.chrysurus.

I'm leaning pretty heavily towards P.asfur myself......

Mike,
Thanks for the link....

Boomer,
Thanks, I guess thats settled then. :D

Gabby,
I think its cute too, hopefully it will continue getting better and can be moved from QT over to the main tank soon.

I'm posting up some more recent pics of the angel. Its now 2.75 inches nose to tail. From what I've read and been told via various boards, Asfur angels usually change to adult colors at a small size like Navarchus angels, and this one hasnt yet.

A friend of mine has a large system (approx 1000 gallons) and is interested in the angel, but I would to like ensure its ID prior to him getting it if possible.

Does everyone still think this is a juvi Asfur? It is sharing a tank with a 4 inch Indo Pacific Regal, (Dominant fish in the tank), a 2 inch Purple tang, a 1 inch Convict tang, and a 3 inch Tomini tang, so I realize space/inhabitant stress could be slowing color change. It is most definately not slowing growth though as the angel has almost tripled in size since the first pics in this thread.

Thanks,

Nick

I'm thinking the same thing, just want to be sure. From what I've read, Asfur's hit adult coloration pretty early on.

I'm seeing some aggression between it and the Regal, and I know the fish will outgrow my system regardless...Asfur's hit 15 inches, Mac's hit 18.

Its a great fish Curt, and to be honest I'd rather not get rid of it, but the space requirements for it are going to be more than I have....

I agree on the asfur and they do hit adult coloration pretty young. When I got mine it was less than three inches and already had its adult coloration.

Pics from yesterday of the angel. I'm certain its a Mac angel at this point.
The fish is now approx 8 inches nose to tail. Its still very skittish, and takes its time to get used to people around the tank.

Photo's are under 400w Radiums...no flash...

I believe the current owner is looking for a good home for this fish, it's begun snacking on SPS, so if anyone is interested, its in the St Louis area...Shipping is doable if need be....

It's a beautiful fish, and eats very well. Frozen, flake etc...not picky at all.
