Reef Aquarium & Tank Building Forum

Help Support Reef Aquarium & Tank Building Forum:

it means that I'm making things uncomfortable for the status quo, and it can sure use it.

Is that what you want to do here?

If you think I was hazing you, I wasn't. I only asked you to actually say something.

There are alot of things you could say, like who are you?
What kind of salt tanks do you have/want?

Wow, you're really a malcontent, aren't you?

Sorry, I think I totally misread your comment as another one of those semi-literate rantings that seem to clog up the blogosphere. Thanks for defending my unorthodox approach.

I really have to agree with this. Here at RF we want folks to take the time to get 50 posts before using the FS forums so we can get to know them. Yet lately just about whatever someone new posts they get comments like "use the search tool" and other negatives. If I was to try to join RF as a newbie (whether to saltwater aquaria or forums for that matter) I would be very intimidated.
I guess what I am trying to say is, how can we make new friends on here if we attack everyone new who makes mistakes in the hobby or forum etiquette?

Just my two cents that I couldn't help but throw in.

Thanks...your message made me realize that I had totally misread the other comment as yet another petty attack.

That's not the primary reason I'm in RF, but I thought I'd be able to post links to things that ought to be of interest to everybody who likes coral reef animals (and plants), not just the captive ones, but if people are offended by that material for some reason, I'd like to understand why. And if I'm violating some specific posting policy, I'd like to know that also. The specifics of my my set-up don't seem important enough to share at this time.

no prob...
i was actually pretty p.o.'d by the peanut gallery attack on your seacology thread... but it was deleated before i could post.

basically in a nutshell i said something like;
DONT ANYONE dictate to me or others WHAT this website is for... (unless your name is Chuck)
and dont just go around parroting what the mods say, let them do their job...
it's obvious there are plenty of bloated sheeple here who just want to spew a bunch of garbage that would clog an otherwise normal thread, and then go sell a bunch of crap, but if that's what they want to do, then let the simpletons revel in their squalor...it's not hurting you... you guys are likening it to blight in a neighborhood, i say dont look at it...if your really so bothered by it. because reading peoples obnoxious criticism about people's posts is just as, if not more offensive most times than the original "offending" post.
(case in point, this post  :) )
and spiffluk has hardly posted ANYTHING so offensive as to merrit such a freak out from the aforementioned peanut gallery. before the whole 50 post thing, everyone would have been like "oh cool link man, thanks bro!!"

and as for the suggestions that spiffluk needs to contribute more?
i would say we need to keep or minds on or own "contributions".

Instead of attaching someone else's stuff here, why don't you post your own ideas on the subject matter and ask for a discusson.

Umm, wut?? Srsly. The OP was just sharing with us a tip on an interesting reef-related article. Why the attacks? I thought it was a fine post. Honestly, I get annoyed by n00bs that come in acting like tards, but while I'm not familiar with this particular poster's history here--apparently making pointless posts or something?...sounds like--the post itself was fine. Don't attack the poster on a legitimately fine post just because you have some personal vendetta or something.

Felt this was relevant:

Spiffluk, PM me about the article; you can email it to me or something, we'll figure it out. I'd honestly like to read it and also try to help you get it posted here, because after all, it's a REEF-RELATED article and thus ideal for us REEFERS here on this REEFING WEBSITE. Kudos for the post, as I just learned about the topic of ocean acidification only fairly recently, and would love to know more since I know so little about it.

no Al Gore bumper stickers outside the Reef Store this weekend..

In reading Spiffluk’s various posts and some of the replies, something came to mind. I am not sure my thoughts are entirely well founded, but I will put this out there for discussion….

Spiff has posted links to various articles on mans impact on the ocean and our environment. It seems a few of his original threads have been removed so I am unable to reference them now. I would imagine that Spiff posted to this forum with the belief that people who keep marine animals as a hobby would have a passion and concern for the environment. My question is; is this a valid assumption? At the root of a reefkeepers motivation to have a show tank, is it not a form of vanity, or perhaps a self serving desire to surrounds oneself with beauty, that drives us to become involved in this hobby? Do we spend thousands on equipment and livestock because we are trying to preserve and further knowledge of coral ecosystems, or do we just think its cool to have a piece of the reef in our living room? Reefkeeping certainly adds a substantial amount to our “carbon footprint”, the electricity alone used to run some of these tanks adds to the overall greenhouse emissions of mankind. I am not even talking here about live animals taken from their native habitats as most of us seem to propagate tank bred specimens, I am referring to the amount of energy used in creating the equipment, tanks, skimmers, etc etc, (to produce 1 kg (2.2 lb) of PMMA, about 2 kg (4.4 lb) of petroleum is needed), and the energy required to run the system, lights, pumps, etc etc…
It would seem a peculiar hobby for someone who was truly a diehard environmentalist. That being said, I wonder if Spiff’s posts are finding a sympathetic audience. Now please, before anyone jumps on me, I am not saying there are not caring wonderful people involved in this hobby, just that I doubt that most of us drive Hybrid Prius’s shop at PCC, use our own canvas shopping bags everywhere we go, and champion the cause of public transportation, I could be wrong, but Reeftank Aquarists do not necessarily equal environmentalists.

Well I have to go jump in my 8 Cylinder Dodge Durango (13 MPG) and drive to work,

Ichthys

Well Mike, I guess this says it all about me.

Thank you and Skimmerwhisperer for posting I seriously feel bad for Spiffluk and wanted to speak up but was too chicken lest the pack turn on me. Plus I hadn't seen his other posts.

I'm not an environmentalist; I too like bacon and we have 5 cars (but can only drive one at a time :) but I'm still interested in what's happening in the world and appreciate any small contribution that I could make to at least reduce the impact of my hobby.

Seeing as I am relatively new to this forum, I just wanted to clarify something for future reference…
The OP was…
“FYI in the latest issue of Scientific American (August 2010) there's an excellent article on ocean acidification by Hardt and Safina. I couldn't attach a pdf file of the article to this post...perhaps someone more tech-savvy than I can teach me how to do it.

AJL”

The response was….
“Instead of attaching someone else's stuff here, why don't you post your own ideas on the subject matter and ask for a discusson (sic).”

This response is construed as an attack? Assault, assail, snipe, vituperate, or otherwise just be nasty like? Just want to be clear as I never want to “attack” anyone unintentionally. So the OP relayed a piece of information and asked for assistance on how to accomplish something. The responder suggested an alternative means of accomplishing the goal. And this is an attack?
Example:
OP.. I am having a hard time getting good polyp extension with my PC lighting retrofit. What kind of reflectors can I use to increase light output?
Response.. Instead of trying to get those PC’s to put out enough light, why don’t you switch to MH?
Using the same logic, this response would be an attack? Fascinating.

We are not all on the same page and thats ok

I know spiffy ,he has been coming in for while.

Sometimes I wonder where he is going in the hobby and also why,but I know that he likes the idea of saltwater fish and or reefkeeping.

I try to relate and help everybody equally, the last time spiffy came in I was a little rough and after reading this info I do feel bad.

Spiffy will you forgive me?

Also I have never known anybody to lust after a spinecheek like spiffy does!
Still have a trio here:p

Your always welcome here,
ARSA

Sorry, I'm not up on the latest cyber-jargon...what's OP and PM? I can email you that Sci Am article. And thanks for backing me up on this.

OK, perhaps I was a bit testy from the first round of 'criticisms' of my first few posts which did not address the content of my post at all but instead criticized the fact that I had posted something that had to do with the future of wild coral reefs and not a personal statement or question specifically regarding the reef hobby. But it still came across as annoying, and even a little disappointing.

Oh dear...where to start? You apparently missed my very first post (titled 'Sustainable Aquariumkeeping?') where I wrestled with the very issues that you mentioned, including the energy one. In a nutshell, I went ahead and cobbled together a simple tank with basic equipment (mostly used) such as a simple undergravel filter (remember those?), used Puget Sound seawater from the Seattle Aquarium (which has worked out quite well by the way), situated the tank where it gets natural light, and am stocking it with second-hand creatures I got from, yes, this illustrious forum. I figured that since I installed solar panels, have a hybrid car (which I don't drive often), insulated my house, eat vegetarian and organic, reuse/recyle/compost, etc., I've done far more than most people already in terms of being green, so I can afford this one indulgence. But I'm sure there are those will disagree with me, and usually they're people who don't make env'tal protection a high priority.

How is asking the op to give us his views, a attack?

In case you didn't see my previous reply, all I want to say is that I think it's perfectly legit (or should be) to post interesting material written by someone else, without adding editorial comments, and invite a discussion about the material, not about posting etiquette.
