To this day, I still have no real idea as to what happened. For all I know, they could have sprayed for mosquitos and something drifted in. Ron, I don't know. I took more water samples over to Spokane than I was good for, and nothing tested out of the ordinary???????? Have you got any theories?? There is a thread going on now asking people for concrete absolutes in this hobby, I can't for the life of me figure out how you can look for absolutes when crap like this happens. Aquarookie, sorry for the hijack, I'll crawl back into my snowcave in Montana and let you have your thread back.

i don't think it's a hijack:D ..it's good info for someone wanting to start sps!!..i just started.i have heard horror stories before, i just hope that i can avoid being a victim..i don't have any clue what could have caused that..maybe it was too much skimming or running too much, or not enough carbon:confused: if anyone knew all the answers, that would be a miracle!!:D

Charlie, when I had that problem several weeks ago I hadn't a clue as to what was going on but I had better sense in that I emailed Eric Borneman. He answered immediately and told me to call him which I did. In my telling him what I was seeing and his relating a story of something that happened to his tank we figured out what was going on. In his telling me what to try to remedy the situation we find out exactly what was going on. I did it and the tank is back to it's beautiful growing colorful state. It's that when you can figure out whats going on and fix it but in times like what you had it's the sadness that we all experience. Not knowing and so not being able to fix it and watch the horror that comes is the opposite end of the fun of keeping these corals.

Sue, Eric and I talked also, and he was also baffled, We went thru parameters, like I had never been thru parameters. I tried to cover as many people as I thought was necessary, just short of a nuclear scientist,:) :) :)
I figure I was just one of the unlucky ones, kind of like someone turning your card over and saying your it. Oh well, now I am to the point that I can't wait to get going on my next adventure, but I have to wait until at least March when I get back from the race in Vegas.

Sue, if you don't mind me asking, what was the problem in your tank?? i just want to know what to look for!!!!

I am constantly having discussions with my wife about softies vs sps, she likes how the softies move with the water, I like the vibrant colors of the sps. The main reason I like sps is that I like clams and they seem to go well together.

That's funny, my wife says the same thing. I always thought it was a hoot to show them the softie tank first, then take them into the room with the 300.

Thanks Charlie for posting that, I'd never of known how to do that. I can say that as of yesterday I am seeing some major increases in growth too. My rock steady calcium has been at 420 for ages and yesterday was down to 400. So I am going to up my kalk. mixture and I now may be able to use these 2 5g. buckets of Oceans Blend. It is a liquid calcium additive and an alk/pH additive. Growth seems to be accelerated for the moment.

Tim, you couldn't be more right on... clams and sps go together perfectly.
