Well, it has happened, we have lost our first inhabitant :( For about 3 days we didn't see p.shrimp or goby. After 3 days, we stared seeing p.shrimp peeking out, and he actually looks like he has molted! I figured well this is the reason they have been barred up in their cave this whole time, and figured I would give them a couple days to hang out. Low and behold, while peeking around the back of the tank, I found a carpet surfing casualty... orange spot goby himself :(

:(. I've lost a tail spot blenny this way along with a firefish goby. I've tried to cover my thank up to prevent this, but I end up removing them after a while since there kind of a PITA.

Ahhh, that sucks!! Why is it that fish seem attracted to our carpets? Or maybe it's not an attraction at all. Maybe it's something "fish therapy" can cure. Maybe, every once in awhile, we end up with a fish depression issue and if not caught in time, we end up with suicidal fish.

J, sorry to hear about your loss. It always sucks finding a fish stuck to your carpet and all dried out. I've had two in the past 18 months or so.

Thanks everyone for the kind words, I knew he was a jumper, in fact he jumped twice while acclimating. Interestingly enough, he started displaying signs of interest in jumping shortly before the event took place. He would swim up and away from his little spot and display his fins while edging closer and closer to the surface. I should have taken that as the first clue as to what was on his mind, unfortunately I did not.

Next item is to capture his friend the pistol shrimp and trade him off or bring him back to the LFS. No more potential carpet surfing gobies for us, I refuse to stifle the beauty of a topless system with ugly egg crate :(

Thank you again everyone for your condolences on our loss, we really did enjoy his company

Indeed Mike, indeed :( First thing we have actually lost in the tank, aside from a turbo snail, which was caused due to crappy acclimation process/ignorance. I knew someday something like this would happen but hoped it would not be fore a long long time.

I guess we can take comfort in the fact it wasn't necessarily our fault (aside from not using egg crate), and water conditions were not the cause of the loss.

Sometimes you just can't stop'm. I've got one lil' crab that likes to climb up onto my overflow and perch himself on the very top. Unfortunately for him it's just mere inches from the Halide. I've found him near death several times and his once purple shell is now bleached out white but he's still determined to climb that overflow.

That sucks, theJ. :( I lost a diamond goby the same way. Eggcrate is my friend nowadays.

I hate the look of egg crate as well but I lost a wrasse and one of my gobies this way as well and now that I have a sfe I had no choice but to do it, fortunatly my tank sits high and unles your tall like me you don't see it; did not affect the lights as much as I thought it would either...
