Hi folks

Our family room where my tanks are has wall to wall berber style carpet and it needs to be cleaned.

Do you think this would be a safe product to use, and/or do you have any other recommendations on how to do this without endangering the tank inhabitants?

SafeChoice Carpet Shampoo Rug and Carpet Shampoo is an odorless and dye free cleaner and odor remover and safe for chemically sensitive. It contains no harmful chemicals like ammonia, butyl ethers, alcohols, phosphates, caustics or acids. It is not toxic, non-corrosive, non-flammable and biodegradable. It does not irritate hands or skin. SafeChoice Carpet Shampoo is designed to be used in conjunction with SafeChoice Carpet Seal (to seal carpet backing) and SafeChoice Lock Out (to seal carpet fibers and repel dirt and stains). This three part system cleans out and seals in the harmful chemicals found throughout a typical carpet. SafeChoice Carpet Shampoo is also highly effective when used individually as a carpet shampoo. SafeChoice Carpet Shampoo is suitable for synthetic carpets and rugs. Because of variations in materials and production processes used by different manufacturers, spot test to insure compatibility with your carpet. Wool fibers generally do not react well to water based products, so SafeChoice Carpet Shampoo is not recommended for wool.

Here's the website where it can be purchased:

I would just use the rug doctor cleaner you get off the shelf at Safeway. Thats just me though, my son squirted windex in my old softy tank without harm. I dont worry to much about average household cleaners.

Jan,
I shampooed my carpet in my livingroom about a month ago. I did not think about the possibility of harm to my fish and just did it, I had no problems. I have a Bissel steam cleaner and just used a shampoo made for a steam cleaner. I think as long as you are not using a product or cleaning method that would put particles into the air you will be fine.

Let me know how the Berber cleans up, I have not shampooed my Berber upstairs because I have been concerned that with the carpet being wool that I could damage it with the water from the steam cleaner.

Then, of course, there's the other end of the spectrum where it's also about what YOU are breathing. I can't stand the smell of artificial perfumes and most of the other crud in carpet cleaners or laundry detergents or most other cleaning agents. I've used a couple of construction products from AFM, the company that makes the soap you are talking about. Their Safecoat paint works great inside and after a day it doesn't smell. Regular paints (and even other low VOC paints) smell and off-gas for a while. So, it's probably a good quality soap and will irritate you guys, the dogs, and the tanks less than other things.

The rug doctor is not environmentally safe. Use heavens best carpet cleaning they are the most environmentally and pet safe out there
