I know that there is seahorse.org and other forums for seahorse lovers out there, but do we have enough interest here for one (at least informal?). Afterall, this is the definative source for all questions/answers, right :) ??? I have 11 seahorses in a species-"only" tank (okay, a few gobies too), and wonder if there is anybody else out there. I can't even begin to tell all the stories, they are incredible. And, with new permitting requirements, they are hard to find (but I know where to find a few). Look for pictures in my photo gallery soon, as soon as I can figure out how to better use my autofocus digital camera better (it focuses on the aquarium front, not the ponies).

Hi Oscapus. What species of seahorses do you have? How long have you been keeping them?

We are seahorse keepers too, actually breeder wannabes. We have 5 H. comes (tigertails) four of them we raised from day one to now they are over a year old. We also have 6 H. erectus and 10 dwarves plus 5 dwarf fry. Each species has it's own species only tank (with the exception of a couple of blennies). We have a couple types of nursery tanks ready and the horses are courting, so we hope for fry soon. I'm also very involved in culturing their foods.. I have phyto, rotifers, copepods, amphipods, and 4 kinds of shrimp.

we are now experts

with the two previous threads we can now call this forum a place of expertise. There are two important situations important to the pony collectors; switching their herds to frozen foods to promote good nutrition and the fact that Viagra works.

I too am a breeder wanna be. Just when I got my nice seahorse tank setup, the new CITES permiting requirements kicked in, and I only had 2 male old timers to put in there. That is good since they are in trouble worldwide, but really increase the price and reduced the availability captive bred. I least I no longer have to ask if they are trained to eat frozen mysis!

All of mine are Reidi (Brazilian yellow) but that is not definative. Two I have had for over 2 years, one male is black with some white (not striped snouted) and the other is a male dull yellow/black. He is mean, and killed some young Kuda I recently got. He bullied them around, and finally wrapped his tail around them for ballast and crushed them to death.

In the past 3 weeks I have got many more. Two really large yellow/black females, and a large dull black female (she got my old timer black one pregnant within days). Just yesterday, I got 2 tiny yellow females, and 2 mated pairs of chalky black (gorgeous).

They are all together in a IAP 60gal 24" cube, cherry stand and canopy, IceCap 400W electronic MH with 14k Hamilton bulb, custom IAP refugium (my design) with Corallife 96W 6500 PC, AquaC EV-180 skimmer, and a big jar of ROWAphos in a Rainbow Lifeguard fluidized bed filter. I also run lots of Purigen, and carbon occasionally. All pushed by a Gorman-Rupp 410 pump. Gee, we all sound like we are describing our souped up '69 Chevy! I should put some stickers on the tank....

I have lots of live rock and macroalgae (cheato, gracillaria, and halimeda), and live sand. The only corals are purple gorgonias. I don't want any potential stings or neurotoxins in there.

Everybody is ravenous for Hikari frozen mysis soaked in Kent Marine Zoe and Zoecon. I lost 4 seahorses last year to what I suspect were parasites in the frozen mysis (a different brand). Look for BioPure, Gamma, or other indication of no parasites. They would be feeding but dead the next day, water quality was great. Who knows. My old timers love live feeders, but that experience stopped me from feeding anything potentially having parasites.

I could go on and on, and write a book about their antics, but I hope I answered your question here of what I have!

I wanna have some ponies in my refugium I am planning for my 150 gal at the resturant. Maybe around this time next year it'll be ready for em.

I am getting dwarfs in 2 to 3 weeks!!! I would love a pony forum. I am always on Seahorse.org, but they have to preview your post before they allow it to be posted, and it sometimes takes forever to get an answer. On here the post shows immediately. Vicky (Wink) on this board keeps dwarfs and other ponies too and is good for a lot of information!

Put ponies in a refugium? I would proudly display them, not keep them in a cage so to speak. Judging by my friends, the "cute factor" is much higher than with any fish or corals, and I suspect your diners would agree. I would even advertise the feeding times (at least twice a day) to draw your customers in, just like feeding time for seals etc... at the zoo. Make it at 3pm, your least busy time, and later during happy hour?

You will be able to see my fuge. It'll be just like a whole nother tank to look at. I can hardly wait. :D

Sounds great. I find myself "popping the hood" on my tank just like a car to show off the 'engine" to my friends. We all underestimate the importance and display potential for our sumps etc....Maybe being relegated to the lower tank would increase the cute factor, kinda like living out back in the tree house.....??? :p

Reefsupply - how many gallon is the nano-cube and how tall is it. Say for a pair of full size seahorses you're gonna need at least 15 gallons and tank should be 3 times the adult height.. about 18 inches or so.

If the tank is smaller then that I'd suggest dwarves. There may be some H. breviceps coming on the market in a few months.. they are an inbetween size but they are subtropical and would require a chiller.

Is it an injury or disease? If it's tail rot it's pretty serious. You'll want to treat in a hospital tank with an antibiotic if there's any sign of infection. If it's an injury you probably want to put a local antibiotic on it.. neosporin or equivalent. Is he hitching?

When you say neosporin, you mean the actual Neosporin lotion? I would just like to clarify.

Thanks,
Elmo :)
