Site Was Hacked Into Last Night

Some of you may be aware that our site was down last night (2/24). Someone got into our site and did some things to mess it up a bit. As a result, the complete site had to be backed up and the server software was completely reinstalled.

It appears things are running again, but I see a result of the whole thing is that it appears there are missing images in the photo galleries. Many of you may find some of your photos not there anymore. I do not know the reason for this. I apologize in advance if you find that your photos are missing. I may do some sparadic cleanup to get rid of the "blanks".

Please accept my apologies for this. It was unforseen that some of the image files would get lost

I have to give Chuck & Mike & others a Big Royal Awesome Atta Boy for working so hard to restore everything so quickly, man your great. It is a shame that someone would purposefully set out to destroy what I've come to call my reefing home, what a swell place to be, we never try to force issues, we try let everyone post their thoughts, ideas & help others, we have strongly discussed topics, Mike & Chuck go out their way to make this place as easy going as possible. If someone gets upset to the point of trying to hack us up instead of just going to some other reef site.

was it just our site or was it the entire hosting server that our site is hosted on? are we hosted on a dedicated server or a shared server? i'm more curious if someone just targeted our site or was targetting the ISP that our site is hosted on.

We are on a dedicated server. It was our server that was having issues. The main reason why I put the stats at the bottom of the pages is because I was seeing higher than normal server loads and was wanting to keep an eye on things. Apparently someone was running some program on our server that increased the load and eventually stopped all outgoing email traffic. We don't know what they were running but can only suspect they were hijacking our mailserver.

The entire server was backed up and the complete server operating system and components were installed from scratch.

We may have some losses (pictures here or there) that the backup utilities were unable to recover, but all in all I think we came out of it in pretty good shape.

Yeah, I agree....it's a genuine shame that there are people out there that have nothing better to do and/or are malicious enough to mess with a site that represents so much work and is filled with nothing but friendly people just trying to help out others and share experiences with other people in the hobby....it's a shame indeed, it makes me sad...

I just got back from 2 weeks of scuba diving in micronesia [Paradise] , the stand isn't quite ready and the sump isn't ready. I'm still gathering plumbing parts and a few things are still backordered, but without the stand and sump, nothing much is going to happen. When the stand and sump are here, things will happen pretty quickly.
