Skimmer issue

I have a 55 gal set up at the moment with a 40 gal oceanic sump. Now the only problem i have is that my collection cup unfortunately is to high.i have cut it about half an inch to see if it made a difference but no luck there. anyone have any ideas or suggestions about how else i should attempt to modify it? I have also debated making my own collection cup. Not sure if anyone can help but its for a vertec skimmer the one recommended for 80 gals.

are to trying to say your skimmer is too tall for the stand??
how tall is the stand?
