I'm looking for suggestions on small mid section swimming / schooling fish. Probably 3/4" or smaller. I already have five little green chromis but would like something that will stay small.

Thanks
Don

Is your tank covered?

I like Royal Grammas and Black Cap Basslets. If the other fish are peaceful they will stay out of the rockwork and swim around mid-level.

Thanks I went to live aquaria, they had some blue reef chromis. Know anything about them? Look like the greens but blue and much more expensive. I was at a lfs a few days ago they had some tiny 1/2" pale yellow fish but they didnt know what they were.

Nope, no cover and its rimless. It does have loads of flow right on top so even the chromis seem to avoid the surface but Im sure things like firefish would just hop right out.

The blue chromis have a higher death rate during shipping so that's why they are more expensive.

If it was sitting around, it was probably a citron goby or a yellow clown goby. If it was swimming around, it was probably a yellow coris wrasse. (They are usually shipped as babies but they won't stay that small). Possibly a Spanish Flag fish (not usually available). Male blue spotted or blue green chromis are pale yellow when resting....some change to green when active, some change to blue spots on a yellow body, some change to mostly blue. Very interesting fish but the adults will be larger than you are seeking.

A properly nourished and fed Chromis should manage to exceed 3" in captivity over time.

Very few fishes will hold that size AND behave as you'd like them to. When you're small, you tend to hide in the reef rather than swim in the open. :D

The blue reef chromis are cute. They are active swimmers and don't really school. They do dart back and forth between eachother though, which looks pretty cool when you have alot of them. Its nice when you have the blue reef with the green chromis because they act differently and it adds alot of movement in the tank.

I like the Fridmani as well.

I do find it sort of odd we dont have a selection on very small fish available for reef tanks. Fresh water has a bunch of choices. This time around I'd like to overstock with small fish rather than the typical fish.

Thanks for the input

You might try a number of yellow-stripe or blue-stripe gobies. The don't really school, but they are small and they do swim around enough.
