Help Support Reef Aquarium & Tank Building Forum:

I am sharing email I recieved yesterday.
Here it is..

Happy New Year

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi Ed,
I hope you're having a good year so far.
Hopefully we can coordinate some shared speakers before long. I'm sure Dana Riddle is still interested.

Is Ryan Gent still an the area? Let me know where I can contact him, if possible. Thanks.

Take care, talk to you later!

here is the last e-mail I got from Dana.....This was in July....I guess his speaker fee is half his girlfriends airfare.....

Aloha Randy-

Thanks for the reminder. I've given up on the Portland trip for now (too much confusion, and not necessarily their fault).

SLC said they could 'make things work.' If you wish to contact Adam Blundell and see if you two can sort things out. My girlfriend will travel with me. I can use some of my SkyMiles but ask that the clubs split her airfare (we'll continue on to Big Sky country over in Montana). Later in the year (late summer or fall is better for us).

Thanks,
Dana

Well it doesn't say that and I guess we need to do an estimate to see what kind of airfare we are talking.

PSSSSSSSSSSS let's not book ANY summer speakers. We have Fatherree (sp) for September, and we can build from there. NO June, July or August.

We also need to think about that vendor night......

For next year I'd realy like to see a meeting on lighting, wether its with pat from PFO or someone else...the "different lighting needs for the home reef tank"....or even "Reef lighting on a budget"

how about a meeting on reef Chemistry? Boomer on RF would be perfect for that! :)

What do you guys think about a meeting on the great BB vs. DSB debate?? :D

I think these topics that could draw in the numbers.....Just not sure on who to have as speakers.....too bad Mike's not around, he would be great for the BB vs. DSB!!

just thought I would rant about what was in my head this morning :D

What does everyone think about having a speaker in tacoma?? I think Indoor Reef would love to sponsor a meeting in tacoma....I called TCC and we can get a room with a powerpoint for $210....also FYI.....Indoor Reef is working on installing several sw tanks there!!!!

Tell you what, how about a membership "poll" using the poll feature and see what they say. We have had a meeting at Indoor Reef by the way. THe mud guy, on the tip of my tongue, sorry just back from work.....

I dont know if there are enough people that far south to justify a meeting at the college. Paul has all the equipment needed, we had the one meeting but was not very good being standing room only.

Reed, spit it out.

Another prospect for speaker is Mitch Carl. Omahas Zoo Aquarium, Coral Prophagation, pest, predators and disease of corals. No fee required.
He just ask for a warm bed and Fun people besides flight.

More Fresh meat

sounds like a good speaker...lots of other clubs have great things to say about his presentations....

here is a little bio for those not familiar with him...

Mitch Carl was born and raised in the hotbed of Marine Biology: Omaha, Nebraska. After a brief stint in freshwater, he began his saltwater career at Animal Talk Pet Center in 1994. After quickly realizing that he had no customer skills whatsoever, he obtained his Biology degree from the University of Nebraska at Omaha. Not because he wanted to go there, but because he could afford nothing else. With degree in hand, he marched immediately to the Henry Doorly Zoo and demanded/pleaded for a job. After being mocked mercilessly, he was offered a volunteer scuba/underwater custodian position. Soon after, one of the aquarists mysteriously disappeared and he was offered the job and began his zoo career in 1997. On his way to his current position as Supervisor of Aquatic Inverts, Mitch tore down and renovated 4 displays. His current reef tanks include a 26,000gal Sulawesi Beach tank, a 6000gal stony/sps tank and a 2000gal Symbiotic tank. Add it all up and the Omaha Zoo has the largest volume of water dedicated to corals in the nation (at least for a bit longer!). Mitch also started the Zoo's coral propagation program. This 1000gal system produces over 1000 frags each year, and supplies many zoos and aquariums with captive corals. Mitch's new project is in conjuction w/ the SECORE (SExual COral REproduction) project and he'll be setting up 4 more troughs and beginning the adventure of getting corals to have sex. Before becoming a father to beautiful twin daughters, he and his wife dove reefs around the world (Bonaire, Grand Turk, Roatan, Catalina, Thailand, Fiji, and Sulawesi).

Do we want Mitch Carl?

Ohhhhhhhhh fresh meat. I love that.

Mitch Carl? I think he will be a hit. Do you guys want him and if you do, when?
There are a lot of people wanting to prevent bad bugs in aquariums! I think he will bring a crowd out.
Colleen likes that Fresh Meat too! He is new!:)

Randy,
If Colleen says yes, Which do you want(January or February 2008)? I am betting his topic will be hot with SPS keepers.
